Just wondering do people give their horse flu vaccines every year??

Bought my horse last November and he has had his flu vaccines with his last owner every January for the past 4 years. I didn't give him one this January. He has a bit of a runny nose now and I'm wondering if I should vaccinate him??

Would appreciate all opinions, thanks!!:)

If you dont do them annually you will not have cover against equine flu, that is your choice or possibly a yard rule, you will not be able to compete at some venues, again your choice.

If your horse has a runny nose it could be caused by many things, allergy or virus are the most likely, it is not the time to give a flu jab when the horse is showing symptoms you need to first find out what the issue is, a virus will often just be a cold and run its course with no real treatment required whereas allergies can become problematic if not addressed.

If you do want to get him vaccinated you will need to start a new course now to get full cover just one jab will not be enough.

I do not vaccinate all of mine, only the younger ones or those that compete.

Mine are all covered just incase. There is a bout of equine flu going round according to my vets. Also looked it up and flu can be nasty in horses. Rather be safe than sorry.

I have a two day event at the end of the month! Now I'm panicking because I forgot about his vaccines! Will the first part of the new course be enough to let him in to the event?
Never making this mistake ever again!!!! Cannot believe I forgot all about it:(

You have to have had the first 2 parts of the course of 3 vaccines to be cleared to compete again. The closest the first 2 can be together is 21 days, so unless the event is more than 21 days away (and you can get the 1st vacc done today/tomorrow!) then no, you will not be allowed to compete (well not if they check passports, anyway).

Yes I alway vacinate for several reasons, I don't want my pony to get flu, he needs to be for RC competitions and also for insurance purposes, if you do not vacinate then it can invalidate your insurance.
