flu vacs for the older horse

my horse will not be out competing much now and he is 16 and takes quite a reaction to his flu vac
i am thinking in just getting his tetnus done every 2nd year and skip the flu from this year, do you think the older horse builds up immunity to flu over the years?
or should i keep on with it
i will only be doing local comps if i do get him fit enough to compete again if not will just be pottering about with the odd lesson etc

A lot of people consider this as their horse gets older. I would advise to keep on vaccinating against flu if he is coming into contact with other horses, since older horses are likely to be more severely affected if they do catch it. They don't really build up immunity to flu, whereas tetanus immunity is much more long-lasting.

My vet advised this for my old pony, although he is now 37 and I have his vaccination records back to the 1970s! He never leaves his paddock now, although I have other horses out competing regularly and have not experienced any problems.
