Hi all, since living out our little NF mare is really suffering from the flies. Had the vet out last week so asked while he was there to check her as she's quite swollen and tender in that area, he said best bet is to keep washing the area and get repellent on as best we can ( bit of a wimp with sprays )Her not me. Wondered what the best thing is to wash with , have been using just a mild soap (for horses bits lol) anyone got any ideas ?

Both udder cream and Neem Oil work well for me. It just depends which lot of goo is closest! Sudocrem if there are visible bite areas, smeared down the insides of her thighs, too.

Wow, thanks guys will work my way thru those suggestions and see what works for us. The vet said it's unlikely to be mastitis as she's never foaled, he also said if you press the swollen area and it stays indented then it's likely to be infected and to give him a shout. Good tip eh. Someone could maybe invent some pony fly pants or something lol :D

Pony fly pants would be a great idea, unfortunately I have a gelding so not sure how that would work! My boy had a nasty hole eaten into his sheath by *&%£*%$ flies, best thing I found was to give it a good clean (used IV horse sheath cleaner - pants if you use it in sheath but works well and is gentle on outer skin for clearing off debris/ grease. Then I slapped on a whole load of udder ointment (oh the embarrassment when the other geldings saw him) and dabbed on some Phaser fly gel around the area. The Equimins udder ointment (not cream) is really thick and can create a solid barrier against biting critters. I found it didn't last too long as my boy would lie down and wipe it all over his legs, but he's in during the day so only has to last for 12 hours.

Good luck with your mare, flies are the one thing I love about Winter.. They all die!!!
