Fly Deterrent

Morning everyone, now that summer's on its way those pesky flies are back again. My horse is ear-shy when it comes to anything more than grooming or bridling. It's impossible to put anything in her ears. Does anybody have a useful tip for me? I've got her so far that she lowers her head and lets me rub the base of her ears, but anything more than that and she jerks away. I really don't want to force it because I'll lose her trust. Spray is no option either.

How about Phaser gel? You could apply that with your fingers

Ahh just when you said she lets you rub the base of her ears id just pop a little bit there

Mine wear fly masks with ears. The ear part is huge and goes right over. I got a phobic horse OK with it with accuctomisation; it outs on just like a bridle.

Thanks for the idea, I'll give that a try. Probably way easier than fly deterrent cream!

You could try spreading a little on a small sponge and stroking it around. Most horses will tolerate being stroked on the forehead, but obviously, you know your horse!

I spray it on my fingers to put it round and under her eyes. You could do the same with the ears.

So, I managed to smear a bit around the base of her ears! Emphasis on 'a bit'
