This year fly eggs seem to be really bad. Last year i don't think any of my 5 got any eggs on them :D but this year completely different. My black Miniature Shetland come into night with his neck and front legs covered in eggs so spent forever getting them off just from one day out in the field!!

Does anybody else think this year is worse or was i just lucky last year?

Thanks In Advance x

I also think this year is worse! My 3 are constantly covered, i am forever removing them, i am due to worm soon for bots thank god lol! I have never known my horses to have bot eggs on them like this x

I haven't seen any on my gelding yet but a horse he shares the field with and hasn't seen any fly spray this summer at all has a few bot eggs on his front legs - not many at all though. We had a bad year the first year I came to the yard (6 yrs ago) then nothing really until last year and I do wonder if it's to do with worming/types of wormers being used/not used or lack of it amongst some people that might make a difference to the amount of bot flies that are able to hatch each year and go on and lay more eggs?

Generally and I don't know what species they all are but the flies have been horrendous this year around the horses, I assume due to long periods of dry and warm.

stressedmum - Im glad it aint just me. I know what you mean they are horendous. All have mine have been covered in them  stupid flys!! x

Skint 1 - Lucky you. You don't wan them either!! x

Mochadun - Lucky you. Mmmm yeah most likely as we have had no rain :( Interesting about the wormers etc made me think now. x

That is interesting about the wormers, i never thought about that. I have had horses for 32 years and never seen eggs on my horses like i have this year. In fact i have actually bought my first bot knife this summer! I use fly sprays buy has not made any difference! The flies are very bad this year, hacking out today we were ambushed x

I don't find its the flies who ambush me and my boy its the flamin horse flies  Horrid Things!! x

Wormers is an interesting point - but my boys (who are both wormed to a programme) are both turned out on a field that is poo-picked regularly and was empty for five years before they came last year - and the bots are the worst I've seen.

Have just bought some paraffin because our farrier recommended it for wiping the eggs off with. I've tried white spirit, tried vinegar, tried the knife but one boy won't let me near him with it!

Does anyone else use paraffin or should I be trying something else entirely:(?
