I am just about giving up with flies now!!! I was riding my TBx out this morning across fields and he had such a silly fit as he was getting so annoyed with the horseflies that it was not a nice ride at all. I don't know what else to try tho - i have tried Power Phaser, home made sprays, other shop bought sprays... yet nothing seems to be strong enough or last long enough! Obviously as he is TBx and has thin skin he feels it more when they are biting. Another issue is, we are going to our first show in 2 weeks and I know for a fact there are a lot of horseflies around the area where the show is - so obviously I wanna try find something that will alleviate this problem as much as poss as I am also going to be dealing with the other stresses of going to a show for the first time, and dont want to have to deal with a stressy horse!! PLEASE HELP.........................!!!

I took my TB on holiday regularly for many years in August to the same place and then one year we went in June .... BIG MISTAKE ..... went out mid morning for our usual 5 hour long ride and suddenly he went absolutely crazy, as the horrid horse flies had just woken up for the year (it's the female ones BTW

) and picked on him BIG TIME. My Welsh x coped with them ok ... but not said TB. At that stage we knew we had to return back to the B&B

It culminated in us being 'spotted' by the local police Panda car (in the middle of nowhere I hasten to add

) who, seeing our 'problem' asked where we were heading back to and gave us an 'Escort' back up the lane

. Very nice of him but a bit over the top

We then thought that our holiday was over, as there was no way we could go through that again .... and did not want to bump into the Panda car again

So off we went to the Tack Shop and bought various preparations

The one that we have successfully used over the last 4 or so years is the Coopers See Here . However this means that it has to be applied every time you ride, although I do not use it to the amounts suggested on the bottle as it is very expensive

I am not saying that it would be 100% ok if he was attacked by a swarm again, however it seems to stop them from landing on him, although if he knows one is buzzing around then he is VERY twitchy

We have also bought a Horse Tail Fly Swish which allows his rider to swish any away as well

The worse time is June so things should start to calm down a bit now

Good Luck
