I am having terrible problems with clegs up in the Highlands, and huge deer flies. My youngster is very sensitive about flysprays better with lotions applied and those that have little odour as possible.
Anyone got any recommendations for a lotion that lasts a really long time per applications, is not too strong smelling? My youngster is a few spot Appaloosa and he has a lot of pink skin, which is prone to attack.we tried a fly rug but I cannot get a good fit and also he got sooooo hot in it, he was chasing me round asking me to take it off!

NAF fly spray the black one with DEET is brilliant, apply with a sponge if he's sensitive to sprays, they do a cream in it as well which I use for the head. Have you tried Amino Mio fly rug they are brilliant

Sounds as if a lot of people have trouble with fly rugs..I have an amigo mio for my ISH and it's tight round the front and actually i haven't used it for a while as when it was really hot i found him really sweating where the nylon lines the shoulders etc. My field mate has the amigo bug rug - the original silver version with detachable neck which seems much more generous.

We have trouble here with clegs ( deer fly ) , my old mare came in once with blood coming down her shoulder and one still hanging on !!! I would recommend Coopers , you get a sponge to put it on and it contains premetherine (SP) which is really good for flies and midges etc. You only have to apply a couple of times a week. I have bought some on Animalmedic on line as i think you can pay via paypal..

Use Tritec14 that's what they use in the US. Expensive and chemical based but really does the job nicely. Found sponging on better than spraying.

I'd suggest you give Coopers a try too. It's not too strong smelling and it stays on the coat for a day or two. It is one of the best I've tried, but it's still not 100% brilliant. I've yet to find any fly repellant that is.

I use a Rambo Hoody on my very sensitive TB.

Flypor our vets say none of the over the counter stuff works (have tried coopers/naff off deet in good strength..human stuff contains more)

Flypor v good used in cattle but burns if in contact with skin just dab it on

Vet advised me to pour 40 ml along the spine and mane. Didn't know it burns, no wonder youngster hates me when I put it on him.

I ve just ordered a litre of Naf Deet, I hope it works well enough as I ve only just seen all the comments in favour of Coopers.

The deer flies here are the size of a 50 pence piece and look like a big fat wasp, turquoise eyes and stripes on abdomen, hideous, my old horse can do passage and piaffe when one turns up, they go for him because he his fat and I suspect sweet to the taste! I have found them cutting him with their scissor like mouth parts and then lapping up the blood as it trickles, they are nightmarish stuff. I try swatting them but they are very resiliant too.
