fly masks.....do they work??

i was wondering what people's opinions were on those fly masks that you can attach to the bridle for when your out hacking - do they work?? My horse hates flies buzzing around his head and tries to walk along with his head as low down as possible, trying to avoid the flies. I was wanting to try one of the masks but thought i would ask eveyones opinion first!
 
I used to just put a field mask over the bridle. Did the same job

and did it def help nd make a difference? It drives me mad when he keeps putting his head down but i let him cos i know how much he hates them!! (oh and i hate them too! lol!)
 
Well, it certainly kept the flies away. Get the ones with ears and make sure it fits; I had a mare with a wide face and some masks interfered with her eyelashes and made her even more irritable! Had to try several before I found one that did the job.
 
Thanks for the link E_W_C just had a look and they look good, can you ride in them? do they attach to a bridle as well as a headcollar? And thank you papafrita!

Was looking to get something like this for Jelly, not so much for the fly protection as the blocking of the UV rays. Her bad eye does water a little in adverse weather conditions and as her field doesn't have much by way of shelter I want to protect that eye from anymore damage.

ECW, did yours rub your mare at all?

I used to just put a fly fringe on my bridle and put plenty of fly spray on (you can use wipes around the eyes and muzzle).
 
I've got a crusader one - highly recomended. Any idea what's the difference between the one for the field and the one you can ride in? Just being a cheapskate and not wanting to buy one to ride in

i think it must be something to do with the fastenings on the quiet ride mask. There is only 1 velcro strap that does behind the face. Maybe its something to do with the material they use for the eye areas? just looked at the pictures of the masks and the riding mask has black areas for the eyes whereas the field ones have a grey/white patch? maybe give them a ring and see why they advise no turnout
 
Just noticed my recommendation is the same as other posters (the Cashel Quiet Ride). I also use the Cashel field mask. They are expensive compared to others and since she kept finding bushes to rip the ears on the field one, I bought a cheaper version. It rubbed her though, so I'd rather spend the extra few quid and patch the ears up with old socks!
