not getting far with homemade fly sprays, they work for a 20 mins then the flies beat it, but even coopers is struggling to cover my boys for long

anyone got any that really do work? like proper effective? commercial or home made?

Deosect.

I apply once a week to his head and then all over every three-four weeks. Providing it doesn't rain hard, it does what it says on the tin and lasts for a month between intervals.

I wouldn't bother buying any other fly spray again.

I have used deosect with little success

Must be doing it wrong as it doesnt even stop them landing on him just after I have sponged it on

on the coopers now, great for lice but doesnt last long on the flies at all :S looking at the other options :P

also, tried homemade of baby oil, washing up liquid lemon variety, vinegar and water, and nuttin

My vet in Scotland used to sell me DEET which is what he recommended. It used to be £12 for a litre tin. I now have NAF DEET mailed to me in France.

My Highland has a loose box which opens on to a paddock so he can come and go as he wants and he wants to be in from 7.00am until at least 8.00pm. He has a fly sheet on at night and I use DEET on his mane, tail, chest and hindquarters as well. He is fairly comfy this year in spite of the flys.

I find the Nettex Itch Stop Salve works brilliantly, especially around the head ears and face, BUT, it's an expensive way of doing things as I end up putting it everywhere, this unfortunately leaves his coat a bit greasy, however I have found a great way of grooming him using a rubber mit from a pet shop, this evens it out over his coat and he comes up nice without loosing it before tacking up and riding, he still gets a small number of bites, but nothing compard how many he has had in the past with just sprays, they dry off too quick, good job he is only a 14.2 Po.
