I have discovered a fly repellant that works (well for my horse anyway!).
Net Tex Horse and Pony summer fly repellant cream. It has deet in it. It works, even on the Scottish Midges!!!
My horse was frantic with the midges the last few days and covered in bites, i put this stuff on him and after a few minutes had even stopped swishing his tail!
Im amazed as usually fly repellants dont work!!
So here is my recommendation to other people looking for a good repellant!

Ooohhhh, we have lots of horrible midges at the mo, do you think it will work on humans cos I'm sick of being bitten.... Will have to make special trip to tack shop at weekend (like I needed a reason

Not sure about humans! My 2 horses are in a field next to the river and the midges are terrible. This seems to have made life bearable for them. The big horse didnt have any bites tonight after using it which is a first.
Whereabouts in scotland are you, must be quite near judging by the last trailer post!

Oh good, something that works then!!

Fed up of buying sprays that seem to make not one jot of difference to the fly population but makes a huge difference to my bank balance!!!!

Have just ordered Avon Skin So Soft off eBay that is supposed to be miraculous at keeping midges and flies away.

Fingers crossed !!!

Call me a cynic but I don't think any of them work! If you think of the spray fly killer that you can buy to squirt round your house (works a treat - the buggers almost drop out of the air!) you will see that it says DO NOT breathe it in or get it on your skin. It's so powerful it can kill mammals too! I almost killed a kitten with the stuff coz I was trying to assassinate a monstrous great house spider the size of a puppy, high up on the wall. I am terrified of them. Didn't have anything else to use or a handy arachnophile to help so I emptied almost a whole spray can of fly killer on it. Cat was sitting underneath hoping the spider would get close enough for him to chase and play with {{shudders in horror}} so he breathed in a vast amount of this stuff. Over the next few hours he got sicker and sicker until he was totally paralysed and unable to walk. He could hardly breathe. Vet said, down to the fly spray. Thank god he recovered. But the point is, if it's savage enough to truly get rid of the little buggers that attack our horses, it would be too dangerous to actually use! If anything did really work, the word would spread like wildfire, we'd all be buying it and summer flies would no longer be a problem. HOWEVER ... I'm gonna try some of PAO's cream coz like everyone else I'll try ANYTHING once!

No its a white cream.
It worked for my horse, but my intention was to stop the midges biting at him. i can only say that before I applied it he was throwing himself around like a loony and itching on the fence. after I applied it he seemed much happier and not itchy. It soothes as well apparently so maybe thats what did it.
I just used it along their bellies and up their fronts as thats where the midges have been biting and the last 2 days I havent seen those lumpy bites on them!
Chances are it wont work for long!

Hi....

Will have to get some of this cream...my horse has come up with so many bites on his neck and shoulders last few weeks its terrible. I have been spraying him with naff-off but it doesn't seem to keep the flies of him.

Can you get this cream from most tack shops?

Do you mean the Net Tex Itch-Stop Salve, in a tub. I have used it for several years now, seems to work extremely well.

I bought a tub of very expensive... like £22 .... fly cream, pinkish and smells pepperminty.

Was told it works like a dream...... was not told that my black horse would look like a zebra as it sits on the hair in long greasy streaks which attract dirt like magnets!!!

I now use the avon mix and it so far seems to work..... have just read in horse and rider that you should mix a couple of tablespoons of kerosene..... BBQ lighter fluid in a gallon of warm water and sponge it over the horse

Assume its not a good idea to smoke while doing this.

Sounds v v v v v v v cheap, but does it work????

Ive used Avon's Skin So Soft on my children and my horse and I think this really works! You can buy it cheaper in bulk off Ebay.

Yes it works. I was told to use it by Derrek Knottenbelt (top vet) at Leahurst following sarcoid treatment. (only a tiny bit in a lot of water tho)

I have just bought Deosect at £27 for 250ml

wish I had seen the BBQ tip earlier, and that it works..........

Still the flies seem to be avoiding him a bit more than usual
