What does everyone use?
Never used it on my own horse....but my mams horse is staying with me for a while seems to be increasingly irritated by them

I make my own, capful of dettol, few drops of lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, tree tree oil, make up to 1 litre with water or cold tea..some also add an Avon Skin So Soft product and sandlewood oil but I find it works well enough without

Hiya.I always make my own.It works brilliantly.I use....

6 teabags-leave boiling water to go cold and stew for as long as poss.
1 bottle of malt vinegar.
10ml bottle of Citronella.

Put it altogether and give it a stir then put into a 2ltr bottle, then put into a spray bottle as and when needed. The lot will cost about a pound!.

Girl on the yard spent a good £10 on some Naff fly repellant and her horse gets eaten by the flies/midges....I used Rema's recipe(with added tea tree) and mine are fine

I too use deosect but its strong stuff. You need to patch test it first and it smell like creasote but it works. My horse has had fly bites that sewlled quite literlly to the size of a football. Sine using the deosect she goes out nude and thus far has had no majot bites just very small ones.

hi. i used to make my own but my partner prefers shop bought, there is a great 2 page spread in last months horse and rider dedicated to fly repellents. I am using Naf off at the moment, bright pink bottle, and using the gel for his "willy" and it seems to be good. the best one for mixing and applying in prone areas every other day or so is coopers fly repellent, i use that too, really strong, wear gloves and test skin area first, dilute it! but works great, if i can dig out the horse and rider article i will email you the ones that rate highest, meanwhile, i am also going to pop down to chemist etc for the ingredients and do one half in mine and one half in shop bought and hopefully prove my partner wrong!

Get citronella from the chemist its much cheaper. Mine was 97p for 15ml.

I make my own. I get a big pan of water (about 1.5litres) and simmer garlic in it for about 30mins then let it cool, (I chop about 2 garlic cloves up then strain it once its cool). Add 10-15ml citronella, tea tree, lavander, eucalyptus (sp), and bit of dettol. Pour it into a 2litre bottle and top up with cold tea.

I think our flies just treat anything shop bought I have tried so far as a kind of yummy sauce flavouring

My trial for today is vinegar and dish soap! It always goes on me first as the bugs just love me, they all sort of gather around my head in a feeding frenzy

So far, my arms have remained unchewed.

Citronella is on the shopping list though *wanders off to eBay*

Decided to give the vinegar and washing up liquid a test run and I have just dug out one of the field shelters, although the flies were still around I have only been bitten once, on an ear (note to self, don't forget ears next time)

So, today vinegar and dish soap seems to be working, it certainly helped the GSD, usually the deer flies love his ears, today they are buzzing about looking most put out by the fact that we smell like a chip shop
