Looking for some advice regarding fly rugs. We have a cob who gets sore/baldy areas from the flies around the tops of his front legs where his wrinkles are. We have tried a couple of different rugs and are currently using a snuggy hoods one https://snuggyhoods.com/products/sweet-itch-rug
The main issue we have is that the flies still seem to get to these areas and that these types of elasticated rugs rub these areas. All sweet itch type rugs seem to be the same. We could be doing with one where the elasticated leg holes come further down his legs but I can’t find any. I have seen ones with ‘trousers’ but again there seems to be a gap at the top of his legs. Any advice? ?

he’s always wrapped up like a mummy in the summer because they go for his sheath so we got a sheath guard attachment. He also got bad sores in his ears last year due to flies and gets a burnt nose. Problem is the rascal keeps losing his fly masks so we’re going to try a field safe head collar to see if that keeps it on!

Erm, this might not be helpful but...could you try sewing on some fly fringe above where the flies are bothering...I've seen rugs with fringing but none with trousers!

*leaves to go google fly rugs with legs :D*

my boy is currently staying out during the day with an aussie rug underneath a rambo fly rug. he also has boots and a full face fly mask. he has sweet itch but amazingly hasn't sweated up even in the weather we have had recently. he will not normally tolerate being out all day in the summer, he hates the flies and normally stands by the gate doing his "nodding dog" impression by 11am. so far so good this year. i am sure he will bale out when the flies get bad, but so far he has been happy to stay out longer

I do think washing the effected area with a medicated shampoo dermoline at least twice a week will help, I use benzyl benzoate diluted in aqeues cream every day.

There are some fly sheets that come down more in the front such as Premier Equine, Amigo, and Rambo:

Not sure if that type of design would help. I also use Leovet fly gel (TamTam Vet or Phaser) on my guy's underside from time to time and it seems to help. Along with a soothing shampoo every so often.
