Fly rug for wider horses

Sorry if this has been done to death…recommendations for fly rugs for wider horses?? We have a Welsh D…

We have the swish nylon fly rug which fits perfectly but it’s too warm! She just boils in it, it’s not as cool as they make out not on her anyway!

Shires are too narrow, we have a gallop fly rug which sort of fits but the chest straps are on the last hole and it cuts into her chest…doesn’t look comfy.

Not sure what to try next? Thanks x

Have a look at the Thermo Master range from Kramer. The Zebra patterned ones are lovely and thin and you can also buy them with a detachable neck and probably more important for a wider pony a chest expander as well. My boys are 6ft and they fit nicely across the shoulders without cutting into them as they have pleats in the right places. Reasonably priced too.

I very reluctantly bought a PE ultra lite after it was recommended by a friend with a horse that runs hot. Apparently the material reflects the sun. As much as I hate PE for a variety of reasons, I have to admit it works despite the material feeling rather plastic like. It also washes very well and fits my part bred Shire nicely. It is also very well made and good quality ( small mercies at that price !)

At the other end of the price range I have an Essentials (not a clue who they are) on my ID rather wide but not tall mare, with a belly flap, fits very well and was something like £28.

Are there any wider fly rugs that are cotton? I love the Rambo sweet itch hoodies, but too tight across the shoulder and I hate the lack of adjustment/clips.

Both Amigo and Rambo do XL fly rugs for the larger horse although rambo are already quite generous.

Ruggles and Big Horse Shop do heavy horse build rugs which are wider than usual.

Shires highlander rugs are cut to a broader pattern.

The Big Horse Shop ones are quite a heavy weave tho. We have them.

Like Scats I have Shires Tempest (waterproof on back) on baggins who is an extra full in a breastplate !!

I did go up a size, he's normally 6ft6 so got 6ft 9 and fits perfectly !! Never seems hot in it although I use it more if it's likely to rain tbh.

I also have this rug - if you find your horse sweats its no good, id put it to the autumn waredrobe as my horse was too hot in it .. sizing quite generous compared to gallop fly rug I just have a cheap gallop mesh zebra one and size up as the waterproofing ends up making my mare sweat in anything above 14 degrees..

I have a Big Horse Shop zebra one for my brick outhouse. I'd previously tried Maxima (fitted her as a 5yo but she'd got too wide as a 6yo) and Ruggles (could barely fasten it round her shoulders).

It is thicker than I'd like but she's generally cooler to the touch under it than where it doesn't cover. (Black-ish horse, so absorbs the heat.)
