Argh! So Ted has been more than happy in his hat and coat overnight, but it is scheduled to rain this evening. Would you take them off? Sorry, I know I am being a numpty over this but I have never had to use them before!
My friend has just asked me if I want her to take Apple's rug off-I was having the same dilema as you! After a quick check on BBC weather it said rain at 4am and by 6am it was going to be 20c so i told her to leave it on! Not sure which one you have but my fly rug is the Rambo protector and it feels slightly more plastic like than the material mesh ones and i don't think it soaks the water up as much (thats what i'm hoping anyway!)
Mine is Mark Todd, ultra light and mesh so no, it won't hold the water, I was more concerned about having something wet and sticking over his body, as I am always very, very careful about rainscald, etc. and he is a very itchy horse anyway
And, sounds stupid, but if it is raining then surely that will impair the vision with the fly mask on (don't all laugh at me please!)
I went up to find ours tonight with their fly rugs round their legs, wet and torn
The storm last night must have spooked them. Felt so sorry for them, the rugs were really heavy, damp and smelly. I'd personally not turn out in fly rugs at night in heavy rain and pop it back on in the morning
The weather at the moment is so unpredictable what with thunder storms that unless you know your horse is 100% in storms I'd turn out without a fly rug on.
I'm leaving mine on as we are only forcast showers berks/oxon borders. The temp is still going to be 24 and the flies will still be out in between showers.
Fly rugs are supposed to dry very quickly in the heat.
Hi Weezy, After keeping horses for past 20 years i've finally bought one of the v. light weight standard M Todd ones & I'm really impressed with it. It's on a young welsh cob I have who seems very sensitive to fly bites & is definitely doing the job. He too - turned out over night & in through heat of the day.
My only dilemma is I really want to find the same rug for my mare in a 6'6 & I can't track them down anywhere. Think the pony one i bought was end of line but other brands I've tried on my mare she's just cooked in!!!!!! even in the evening.
Do you mind me asking where you found yours?
Thanks
Vonny
Cool! I won't feel guilty anyway, I sleep through anything and by the time I go up to the yard in the morning he will have been brought in and stripped if he is wet
Mine have had their fly hats back on tonight - despite the rain forcast. I've had them off as their field wasn't 'fly-y' but they both had slightly gunky eyes this morning.
