Fly rug help ?!

Hi I have a 16.1 draught with sweetitch I’ve managed to grown him a lovely thick mane and tail over the winter and worried bout him rubbing it off in summer he gets an injection for the sweetitch so it’s not as bad and I’m looking for recommendations for fly rugs something that covered as possible with ears in or could connect to a headcollar to keep the neck up and something that will cover the stomach as well but I found a few rugs but they seem really heavy and he gets rubbed by rugs really easily so I’m just lost, I’ve been looking at the Rhine gold fly rugs the white and zebra one Anyone have them what do u think?, or any recommendations anything would be great thank you
 
I have had a few Rheingold rugs but not found them great on anything, the fit is not good round the shoulders and they tend to rub, the fly rug has a very open weave which will still allow midges through so even though it may appear light it is cheap for a reason, the last SI one I had in was fine even in the hottest weather with a decent SI rug on, I think it was a Horsewear and he had a couple so they could be changed and washed regularly which helped avoid rubbing, they are fairly expensive but not as much as some and do not cling like some brands do, a quick google found this which could be a good option at a sensible price, Ruggles rugs are often recommended on here but I have no idea what this will be like.

I use the rhinegold zebra rug on my Welsh d and it works well. The waterproof one is good but because the top is black it gets a bit hot in the sun so I have the silver one in heat. The quality is now not as good as it was though. The non waterproof one is a bit thin .

What rug do u usally use for the sweet itch? I was looking. At the Rhine gold but I was thinking that it would rub and wouldn’t stop the flys I’ll have a look at that ruggles one
 
I like the Equitheme sweet itch rugs or the knock offs made to the same pattern. They are made of a very light stretchy material that allows plenty of movement and washes and dries like a dream. They are also very robust. It consists of a body/neck, belly and head and does involve pulling The body/neck over your horse‘s head. My boy who is very easily outraged accepts this very well and he is only two. The head clips to the body at the wither with a long elastic so no restriction with grazing. I found other sweet itch rugs too fragile, too restrictive, too heating or too expensive or all four. I put a fly mask on over the head to protect his eyelids.

Do u remember what site you got that off I’ll have a look I’m willing to pay a good price if it will last and work do they run small or big as my boy so between sizes ik also looking at a ruggle if u have tried those before ? Xx
 
There is someone on EBay that make made to measure sweet itch rugs and they are reasonable price wise, they where the best fit and they never rubbed I would definitely use them again.
 
I like rhinegold zebra one. Velcro’s to fly mask / headcollar, cool, towelling upper lining. Very light weight, very cheap, bit flimsy. I tend to buy a size bigger.

I also have rambo sweetitch hoody’s and use both.

Do ethier of them rub my boy has very sensitive skin

Does it rub ur ponies or is it soft enough material that it doesn’t as everything rubs my fella

I’ve recently bought this after so many recommendations on here. I also have the Shires one.
The Rambo is fab, my only issue is the liner loops rubbed nastily, not really sure why as he has loads of liner loop rugs.
Not the end of the world though, will just get them removed and then it’ll be perfect!

eBay. My horse is a very well large, built RID and the 6’9” which I believe is the largest fits him very well.
 
Rambo sweet itch hoody or shires highlander. Have used both and highly recommend either, depending how much you want to spend. The shires is the cheaper of the two

I just cut them off (liner loops).

this is the only sort I use and no rubbing problems. It is a case of buying quality.
