With the weather forecast for this weekend supposedly hitting a scorching 17 degrees :D:D:D I need to find a new fly rug for my boy. Last year I had a Weatherbeeta with full belly guard which was a good fit initially but eventually stretched so much that the belly guard ended up under his sheath (poor boy)! I then invested in a Shires one but it was not a great fit around his big chest....... so which rugs do people recommend for the larger breeds??

I have a 17hh ID mare who is very deep through the body and have a large deep neck. I have an Amigo fly rug for her and it fits really well and doesn't rub at all

Thanks for the info – out of interest which one do you have – I searched this forum and there was a thread last year on how some of the Amigo rugs were poorly made…

I have a big fella of unknown breeding but with some suspected ID!!

He suffers with sweet itch and I absolutely swear by his Hy Guardian - it's a fab fit for his barrel belly!!

It has a belly guard and covers him from ears to tail :)

Eta. He wears it 24-7 obviously, because of the SI, and never gets rug rubs.

I have a 17h IDx that is similar size to a full ID. We use sweet itch hoodies on ours, he is fine in them, but has to have a good size bigger than his usual rug size, otherwise they are tight around chest and neck.

That is my only criticism of the hoodies - I wish they could be altered more around the chest and neck.:(

NOT derby house! didn't fit Leo at all! and left him rather unimpressed! lol

haven't tried any others so watching the thread with interest :)

:D Poor Leo!!! You look like you would def need a chest and neck expander with that rug! Have to say I'm not a fan of Derby House rugs as previously bought a turnout rug which literally fell apart at the seams.

Lancelot - have you had any problems with the Hy Guardian rug stretching lengthways - this is the problem I have been having??

Thanks for all the other comments so far - anyone else want to chip in their experiences!!??

I know! Haha bless him, and he's an ISH not a ID so I wouldn't haven't thought it would fit at all on any wider chested horses!
The belly straps also didn't do up! Ha maybe that was more Leo's tubby belly! :D

Mine has a Rambo protector which is a very good fit- however it is falling too bits along the seams and coming out of the binding. This started after about a month so not sure if I should recommend as they are expensive BUT my other horse has the same and he's had it for about 6 years and its as new so maybe my newer one was just bad luck?!
Was thinking of replacing with a Mark Todd as he has a turnout which fits fine round the chest?

I've not yet bought their fly rug but have a couple of turnouts from the Big Horse Shop for my chunky cob and they fit brilliantly - deep and actually don't look like miniskirts on her, maybe worth a look
