I have a chestnut mare who looks like a toad when she is bitten in summer. I have her on Flower of Sulphur which helps a lot, but I was umming and ahhing about whether to buy her a fly rug.

Last year I bought her a brand new Weatherbeeta one, but it rubbed her shoulders quite badly so it was only worn four or five times and is now sat in my tack room (I must get my finger out and sell it actually).

So, I need a good fly rug for a 17hh WBxTB who has sensitive skin

i have the Masta one with detachable hood for both mine, they also come with a belly bit too. They have shoulder darts so good for big shouldered horses as they dont rub. Ive never had any problems with mine, and because the hood is detachable and only does up with buckles they dont rub the mane either.

Rafi has to live in a snuggyhood sweetitch rug otherwise he would have no skin , never mind hair, he has to wear it all the time apart from when ridden, poor lad.

I've got the Horsewear one with the brown binding and Missy (16.3hh ISH) lives in it during the day and I've neer had a problem. I'm now in the process of saving the pennies to get a small one for small horse.

My dressage horse with sweetitch lives in his rambo sweetitch hoody during the summer - it is fab! Not cheap but it doesn't rub and it means i have a happy horse who i can ride

I had one of these for my guy http://www.divoza.co.uk/product6981.aspx He suffered terribly with sweet itch, at the time I didn't have the funds for a boett, so I tried the Pagony, a cheaper Boett lookalike. For the price, I was very impressed. Relatively hardy (in a field with barbed wire), a good price, and was great for keeping his sweet itch under control - he actually had a mane!! I guess it depends on how badly she suffers with the flies...

I have an amigo bug rug for Gin which fits her really well. I originally bought a weatherbeeta but didnt like it at all. I pulled on her shoulders and the hood always slid down and strangled her.

Rambo Dustbusters for horses that rub easily! (or any horse, several people up my yard want one!) It's just one long piece of material, no seams, that's really soft and stretchy and hasn't rubbed my lad who's had one for 2 years (and his martingale has been known to rub him! (and he's a NF pony can you believe it! I think I was conned!)). Although not named as a fly rug, they are superb, and he doesn't get bitten at all!

my girl has a rambo hoody.
had it for 4 years and not one rub.worn from april to october every year unless shes being ridden.
looking abit tatty now, but lasted really really well, stopped all her irritations(she goes totally and utterly bonkers if she has flies on her as she got cut up all over her body once and couldnt keep the flies off her unless she galloped about-until i came down

)
my 2yo WB has a tescos fly sheet, dirt cheap(£10 in sale),no breaks or rubs-doesnt stop midges but keep the flies off.shes had it 2 years(was sewn up while she was a yearling) its probably abit small now,she could do with a 6ft6 one but would rather wait untl next year see what size she is and get her one that keeps midges off.

Amigo ones are great

Nice and soft, dont rub and stay intact!!! Dont like the weatherbeeta ones at all, the fabric is almost too soft and does slip

Amigo Bug Rugs, all my girls have them and they fit great. Also have Premier Equine one, they are nice too...... Big lad has an Olympian, but it does slip slightly... Masta and Weatherbeeta don't seem to fit well........

One of mine has a blue Jumpers Horseline one with detachable neck, not used it much to be able to give a good recommendation but appears to fit well and not rub. Other has a cheapy Rhinegold one, not nearly such a nice fit but at £18 for rug and hood it does a half decent job.

Thanks to everyone who has replied...

I was looking at the Amigo and the Mark Todd but I am worried about rubbing on the neck with the Mark Todd one. Has anyone had any problems with this?

The Amigo is slightly cheaper, are there any limitations with this?

I've not got one of these myself but saw one the other day at my local tack shop and thought it looked good - the spec on the web site reads well too:

IV Horse Fly Combo Rug

As I've said in another thread, I really like the IV Horse stuff and the quality of the items I've used has always been very high, so I'd expect the same from this rug. I think their site lets you find stockists if you're interested in buying one... Anyone else any first hand experience of this rug?
