Hello

its that time of the year and my dear old weatherbeeta fly sheet has seen better days so time for some online shopping :);)

I quite like the look of the JHL fly sheet with a very good price of £32.99! i am also thinking about a horseware one do these come up bigger as i know weatherbeeta come up a bit short. Premier Equine was another brand i was looking at

Any recommendations would be good, preferably dont want to spend a fortune on it!

thanks

After the debacle with DH last year (have learnt lesson now!)

I ended up order a HY one off ebay as needed next day delivery.

And im really really impressed with it! Good fit, decent length and has the ear holes for keeping it up the neck! Washes well and is ready for this year!

The premier equine one is very nice

It is indeed.
Have had 2 in the past week - the 6ft was too big in the length as was below his hocks (tho CF takes a std 6ft in all their rugs) and the other 5ft 9 was too small to do up on chest :( really naffed off tbh, as he has the trio, storm buster, bustino etc etc & all fit beautifully at 6ft.

Edited to add: what makes do NOT have buckle straps on the front? I prefer clips with arthritic fingers....

TFF, will watch this thread with interest, wanting an approx 6ft for std back length & short necked 14.3.....

The Mark Todd ones are fantastic - very durable and thick material, but cool and airy for them too. It's got a large belly flap on aswell and I find the whole rug is very well covering of my gigantic CBx mare.

i like the amigo ones! my bigger horse has one and they look great! not ugly or anything there not as heavy as some so keeps the heat of him alot the mesh also doesnt get dirty as it has some sort of blue tone to it which makes it look even beter! not to mention the great straps theres loads so it doesnt hang off in certain parts or twist when rolling plus they do up in 2 seconds!
he enjoys breaking rugs and this ones lasting the longest i highly reccomend it! :)

I don't like spending a lot on fly rugs as they usually end up getting ripped on a branch or something when pony decides he's had enough of the flies!

Robust-wise , I had a super mark Todd one which lasted me a good few summers. The next one was a shires one and it was really good as well.

I wanted a combo one to try out , so bought an amigo one about two summers ago, unfortunately despite my boy ripping the backside off it on a branch(!), the surcingles were coming away from the actual rug and I wasn't particularly impressed with the fit of it either. Towards the end of the summer I decided to buy him one which had a waterproof strip along the back, so price wise I chose the Gallop one . I'm actually really happy with it for the price. He had it on pretty much everyday and it's stayed in good condition, if anything just needs a wash. So I guess this summer he'll have that but I'll still need to look into a normal one. From experience I really liked the shires and mark Todd one.

a little large. both Cs and Bruce are 6'9 in rugs and these fit well in a 6'9 as i prefer rugs to be roomy rather than very snug.

6'6 would def be too tight on them.

the only thing i have had to do is fold the belly flap over at the back and stitch in to hold it as its quite far back and CS managed to wee in to it once (gross), ive just folded the far edge over all the way along and put 3 untidy stitches in (with thick waxed plaiting thread) to hold it-took about 5mins per rug.
Worth the aggro though as they stay really cool under them (actually feel cooler UNDER the rug than the top surface so does a good job of reflecting heat).

I played with a couple of cheaper ones last year I would like to say that I need the hood/mask to be able to be attached to the mask - last year I made clip on a piece of elastic to stop the neck riding down. Am looking at one on line which has bits which go over the ears to stop it sliding down the neck - wouldn't it just make the ears sore? Anything which has a gap at the top by the face or slides down the neck is no good at all!

The Weatherbeeta freestyle detach a neck gets my vote... Super slinky material, design means it doesn't rub at all and has a snug belly flap (so no accidental wee issues!).

PE ones are nice and very durable but the ones we had were quite thick so some had a tendency to get rather hot underneath on nice days compared to the other types of fly rugs.

A little word of warning!
Steer clear of Rambo protectors. I bought my first one new 8 years ago and its still going strong but bought a new one last year and its literally falling to bits- totally un-horse related as I first noticed a little problem when I put it on but figured stupidly it would be ok and my poor horse was being eaten alive. Its now at the rug fixers who said the quality it shocking compared to my old one and she advised against spending too much on repairs as she was worried it will just give way else where. So annoying as it was an expensive purchase.
Im thinking of trying PE or Mark Todd this year- I especially like the extra section over the wither in the MT ones as my horse has a high wither prone to rubs.

OK so I'm a self-confessed "expert" on fly rugs as my trad-lad has sweet itch.

Bought an Amigo Mio......... pricey, for what it is, and TBH was disappointed as it didn't last all that long. A good rug for standing-in though, or for just chucking on say at a show or whatever to keep the flies off, but as a field-rug, nope :(

Had a Mark Tood, fairly heavy-mesh one (not the cheap & cheerful), lasted OK, BUT I didn't like the fact this particular one fastened the tummy-strap underneath with just velcro. However, this was/is a good serviceable rug and has lasted extremely well. So if it didn't have the tummy-strap issue, would deffo buy another.

But the best, although unfortunately not the cheapest, are the Rambo ones. Cheaper, but still very good value and very serviceable, are the Premier Equine ones - I thoroughly recommend their stuff if you're not in a position to go for a Rambo.

Agree with you there - our 3 and our liverys all fell to bits after being roughly a year old. Not cheap in the first place so a little annoyed!!!!

Out of interest is the mesh stuff all coming out of the binding?
I'm gutted! Never again especially with their attitude.
My old one still looks new!

Mark todd ultra (combo) flysheets are really good. The neck length on these is the best I've found. I also have some PE ones which are decent enough, but will be buying MTs from now on.

The surcingles (all!) came off Bruce and CS, and livery ponys - thread just totally gave way. The mesh wore away on Bruce and Figs. Sold the neck covers and binned the rest of it!!!

My horse isn't a sweet itch case but does get bothered by the flies. I tried a few different types and found he got rubbed over the shoulders - best for us has been the Amigo Aussie, which is not strictly a fly sheet, it is water resistant, so a slightly thicker fabric more like very fine canvas and stops his coat bleaching too which is nice... because it's a bit thicker, it's lasted much better - my horse is a scrapper so tends to rip mesh ones, but this one just got little teeth marks rather than ripping. The fact it's lasted a to a second season with him is impressive!!!

Another vote here for Mark Todd, the fit is good & the additional neck insert reduces the possibility of mane rubbing when the horse is grazing. Over the years I've had Shires, Premier Equine & other makes but Mark Todd is streets ahead.

I always buy rugs at the end of the season i.e. fly rugs in October/November so I get them at reduced cost. :)

Surprised by this as I bought a Rambo one last year and have been very impressed with it. Good quality (still looks like new) and kept my hot mare cool and fly free really well.

I hadn't either before I got one - thought it was worth a try to see if it would resist being trashed. Now tbh I'd replace it with another one as no rubbing at all, water resistant for those Scottish rain clouds that come from nowhere in summer, and just thick enough to be tough :) however it's no sweet itch hoodie so I'd not test it on a determined sweet itcher!
