I am looking for a quality fly rug. He gets quite hot so it must be a cooler one and it must cover his neck (and stay reasonably far up!!) as I want him to wear it before competitions to keep him clean in the field!!


He currently has a fal one but the neck wouldn't stay up. I have got a Mark Todd for my other horse but he gets quite warm in that so worried my other boy will get very warm!

I have been looking at the Shire Sweet Itch one or the Amigo bug rug? Anyone experienced these? I had an Amigo years ago if I remember rightly it was a good rug but it was another where the neck used to slip right down..

Any ideas?!

I have the amigo one and the neck does slip a bit

I have a nice Shires Tempest rug, the neck has a stiffened topline so does not slip, my only gripe is that its not generous over the shoulders so I got one size up. the fabric is decent too
 
I find all the sweet itch rugs fairly warm to be honest. Mine gets too hot in them.

The Amigo bug rug is good but the neck slips down. The Rambo protector is better, because the fabric is stiffer.

The premier equine superlite fly rug has a good neck and is not too warm :)
 
To get something cooler maybe consider something slightly less "quality", I find my pony is much cooler in his Derby house rug compared to his mark Todd. I really like the fit of the Derby house rugs as well, I'm a total convert!
 
The Shires Tempest has so much stiffening in the top seam of the neck it rubbed all my pony's mane off. The neck isn't very long either. I agree it's tight on the shoulders.
The Shires Sweet Itch has worked well on my horse even when her ears slip out of the holes the neck stays up. However it's not the coolest sheet.
 
My fussy mare is enjoying wearing her Horseware Mio fly rug, with fixed neck. It's not very robust, but it's a good relaxed and generous fit and at £40ish, is cheap enough. It's lasted a few weeks so far ok with a few minor rips and tears. It's a fine, cool material.

I had previously had her in a much more expensive Rambo fly rug made of a much stiffer material which she hated, and which she successfully managed to destroy on day 1 by rubbing herself determinedly against the field shelter.

Eta, IME the Mio's neck doesn't slip down or rub the mane.

Both mine have these rugs, very good value and last ( most horses;) ) ages!
 
I've recently bought the Bucas Buzz Off Rain fly rug and I really like it. The neck doesn't slip down (has a brow strap) and is keeping him bite free, dry and clean. It has a belly flap too for extra protection. And it's stood up to being pulled at by his cheeky field mate, no rips and looks as good as new still. They're not cheap, but I've seen them on offer online recently.
 
Any sweet itch rugs would most likely be too warm as they are made of a thicker material.
My mare currently wears the Shires stay dry rug and the neck stays up on that :)

Or I'd look at a PE rug, I used to have one for my pony and the neck stays up and they're also very breathable.
 
Have a look at the weatherbeeta Ripshield combo fly rugs - they are excellent and they have a great cut, gussets and the neck does not slip down - as the name implies they don't get ripped! You can get them for about £50 online - the pink rainbow one is usually cheaper - its very colourful and won't get stolen!
