Thought some people might find this useful. My poor veteran is being plagued by horse flies at the moment. After a nasty incident with the mane and tail de-tangler (which I sprayed all over him thinking it was fly spray - when I realised my mistake, tried to pretend it was deliberate so that any fly attempting to land would simply slither off) I decided to treat him to a good and effective fly rug. Now, how do these rugs work coz those bl**dy horse flies bite me right through jods, sweatshirts etc so how does a flimsy rug help??? My local tack shop were very helpful and brought down their entire stock for me to sceptically finger. They had one which felt like chain mail and I thought poor Sunny would collapse in it from heat exhaustion and the sheer weight. Some others were very pretty and snowy white but I didn't think they would keep a butterfly away. Then the most amazing rug! Rambo one impregnated with permethrin! Totally awesome! Fabulous quality, brilliant fit and no flies on my boy now. Impregnated fly repellent lasts 25 washes so at 1 per year, that should do Sunny! Cheap it ain't but then you get what you pay for. Thought you'd all like to know.
