Thought some people might find this useful. My poor veteran is being plagued by horse flies at the moment. After a nasty incident with the mane and tail de-tangler (which I sprayed all over him thinking it was fly spray - when I realised my mistake, tried to pretend it was deliberate so that any fly attempting to land would simply slither off) I decided to treat him to a good and effective fly rug. Now, how do these rugs work coz those bl**dy horse flies bite me right through jods, sweatshirts etc so how does a flimsy rug help??? My local tack shop were very helpful and brought down their entire stock for me to sceptically finger. They had one which felt like chain mail and I thought poor Sunny would collapse in it from heat exhaustion and the sheer weight. Some others were very pretty and snowy white but I didn't think they would keep a butterfly away. Then the most amazing rug! Rambo one impregnated with permethrin! Totally awesome! Fabulous quality, brilliant fit and no flies on my boy now. Impregnated fly repellent lasts 25 washes so at 1 per year, that should do Sunny! Cheap it ain't but then you get what you pay for. Thought you'd all like to know.

Normally he comes in and itches his bum on anything even to the point of nearlly falling over

however he has the odd itch, more from habit than anything else TBH, and is fine the majority of the time. So much better than me getting upset watching him being uncomfortable

Only gripe was belly flaps way too long so had to get mum to put some velcro on further up so he has a double layer under his belly

I have to revert to my post a couple of days ago and recommend the Premier Equine Fly Rug. £42 which includes hood AND fly mask. Amazing quality, lightweight (not the usual chainmail!), deep, long and arrived next day for a mere £3.24 P&P. I reckon this knocks the socks off the competition.

I shall consider approaching them for some commision!!

I'm just not sure about the Permethrim - it's evil stuff which brings me out in a rash and have had cats get bald paches from a permethrim collar -

My thug wrecks his rugs so quickly we no longer buy expensive rugs.

If the flies are really bad I tend to spray my fly rug with fly repellent especially the leg straps, the top of the neck & the sheath end of the belly flap. Definately helps

I would recommend the divoza rug its a boett style rug the material is very light and airy (hasn't sweat so far) and is showerproof. it comes in three pieces rug belly and hood.
its working so far for me but i have my fingers crossed very tightly.

the rambo rug although looks sooper dooper but what a price !!! doesnt stay up (Neck) and thats where my boy itches.

there is rumour on the market that pemethrin is going to be banned.
Be careful because if you buy a treated rug and the substance does get banned you will not be able to return the rugs if a fault or any problems.
