my lad is sporting some rather obvious rub marks on his shoulders from his fly rug. He alternates between his mark todd one and shires one.

does anyone else have the same problem?

My mare's Premiere Equine and Derby House ones keep slipping back- but have not rubbed yet. My boy has a Horseware one which doesn't move or rub, so obviously the more you spend the better (bugger!)

No, I wouldnt of thought they would be heavy enough to rub but mine have sain on chest and along mane never had any probs, shires and cuddly ponies btw

I bought my mare a 6ft Weatherbeeta fly sheet. She is 5'9 in most other rugs and for some reason this rug fits her like its 5'6! Its just so narrow around the shoulders, and if I loosen it off it just slips back and rubs anyway!
I know there are a few nice ones out there with extra material around the shoulders to stop rubbing but maybe if you put a lycra shoulder guard under the rug it may help?

I think like most rugs the different manufacturers sizing's suit different horse shapes, better than others. You need one that is roomy but not so much that it's going to slip backward and rub. Maybe find someone with a similarly built horse and see what they use successfully?
