I have one pony (15hh chunky connie) who is a fly magnet and poor chap gets covered in lumps from fly bites. I use Nettex cream on his belly which helps, but I really need a fly rug for him. I’m struggling to find one that doesn’t drag on his shoulders though, they all get so tight and makes him hot, must be uncomfortable. I also don’t like them if they are too thick and sweaty-making.
So far I have tried:
Amigo Mio
PE super lightweight
Ruggles x 2 diff ones
Fancy HW impregnated one with the plastic chest thingy

Weatherbeta one with the waterproof bit - actually the best fit of all, so maybe I need to try another of these without waterproof element…maybe just answered own questions…

but other suggestions welcome…Aussie allrounder maybe? Or are they a bit hot and heavy?

Auasie allrounder is meant to be great for chunky horses so definitely try one of those x

I have a Gallop one, and a Rhinegold Zambia, and both fit well on my ID with big shoulders, so might be worth a look.

Have you looked at the Rambo hoody or the Amigo bug buster? The hoody is a thicker material, but my very sensitive mare does not sweat in it, only when it's 25+ degrees and a high humidity, even then just a light sweat. She's got chunky shoulders and doesn't rub on her shoulders or withers.

Not sure about the bug buster, but thinner material (my mare is a disaster with rugs and manages to shred them within weeks).

I tend to stay away from Bucas, as they always go lopsided on my mare, no matter how many straps I put on.

I notice a lot of lopsided Bucas rugs, and I often wonder why.

I find that the Rambo Protector has a good amount of room. I often have to size down, and find that it sort of stretches a bit. So your horses usual size would probably work.

The hoody was too hot for my guy, but I think he just sweats quite easily anyway, so the Protector (Bug Buster is the same I think, just treated with Vamoose) works best and is durable. Which is important for gelding field games.

I like the Weathabeeta ones with the shoulder gussets for my chunky pony, I think his current one is called Comfitec mesh II, he can move more freely in this than his old amigo one.

Thanks all. I’ll try the Aussie allrounder first as have seen it for a very good price, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try something else.

I like Amigo bug busters. I have them on my solid warm bloods. I have an Aussie all rounder too which is good but doesn’t have a belly flap.

I love the Aussie all-rounders but both mine shred each others rugs playing so now in ribbons!

I've just bought the Rambo Fly busters (same material as the protector but with vamoose) and they're amazing! Light but very tough with silky lining for rubs - do size down though as my usually 6ft6/9 WB is in a 6ft3!
