I have never used fly rugs before, but I am worried about my old mare getting fly strike on melanomas under her tail. She did last year and it was very lucky I was checking regularly, so no damage was done. However, I am very worried about forgetting to check one day so I think a fly rug might be the answer..there are so many on the market, could anyone recommend one please that really covers the tail well?...also has anyone tried one for this reason and did it work? Thanks.

this is the rambo sweet itch hoody on my pony, bought it because she only gets sweet itch on her dock and base of her mane so wanted to make sure these areas were covered. I am very happy with it, however some people find horses sweat underthis rug, toffee isnt too bad but she has access to shade in the summer. It also has an elastic strap that you can put under the tail to keep the tail flap in place the cons of this is a mare in season. Smells lovely :D

I have the Mark Todd one and the Amigo one. The MT one is heavier but the tail cover is much better. Its not like a flap (attached on 1 of the 4 sides), its like an extra piece of material that wraps around their bottom. :) The same as the hi-vis exercise sheet or T/O rugs from MT. :)

Oh thanks for that too. It is hard to tell online as they don't all show photos of the tail end! Cheers for the assistance..

There are a few here that look as if they would do the job -http://www.dragonflysaddlery.co.uk/itemlist.asp?categoryid=10&subcatid=46&hr=Horse&subcatname=Fly+Rugs&categoryname=Rugs&nocat=y especially the Castle one & the PE one below

Ha the Snuggy Hoods one is hilarious, I couldn't do that to poor Lucy :-)
I love PE rugs and that does look a good long tail flap. I really don't know why I didn't think of fly rugs before to solve this problem. Many thanks for the link!
