I want to get one for my boy but not sure what's good. I've seen a shires maxiflow one with detachable neck which I think is nice but does anyone have reviews of these?

Also, I'm thinking of getting one because my boy is really hairy but I want something that will give a little protection/keep clean without really making him hot. Is this a good idea? Thanks :)

i have a rambo, a premier equine, an aerborn and a mark todd.

the rambo is the toughest as its plasticy mesh, and is easy to repair.

the mark todd has a belly cover which i like.

the premier equine is good for chunky monkeys.

the aerborn has a detachable neck, which would be good if you wanted the option of no neck cover.

Thanks PSparkle :) Ideally I want a detachable neck as I find some rub out his mane. I'm hoping that a fly rug neck wouldn't have this effect as it's so light but I'd rather have the option to remove it if required.

ive had rambo hoody for about 5 years. its was only broken as YOs riggy gelding ripped the back of it off my mare! its a brilliant rug. my ISH wore it all summer 24/7 every year and it never rubbed once. she never got too hot in it either
ive just bought 2 PE hoodies now as the rambos are so expensive, so im glad it gets a good review from Prince33Sp4rkle!

I have a Mark Todd full neck flyrug - my horse is a complete ASBO in the field and has a tendency to trash anything. This is on the third year I think - and only the neck straps have gone, which is easily replaced by some baler twine!

Yeah that's what I thought. I've sent the seller some questions about it being lined on the mane/chest. Must admit, I'm liking the green lol. But would just liek to know if shires ones are any good or whether I should go with MT or PE. I'm steering well clear of Rhinegold lol!

i had a mark todd one - i tried it on for a day and HRH baked under it :( came in all sweaty and hot and bothered...

so i don't bother now - just use a good fly spray

btw - rhinegold.... dont bash it till you've tried it ;) lol
i swear by PE rugs now days but have a old rhinegold LW that is seemingly indestructable! and has never leaked when the WB's do when they get old...

I think you pay for what you get, both with the fit and the material used.

I second Rambo's however some of the cheap and cheerful ones I'm sure are just a good, perhaps don't always last as long though, but if its just for the one summer and you'd rather keep buying something a little cheaper to last you through summer then these seem a good deal, because they have been reduced quite a bit, so you may be getting the quality at a good price.

Thanks posie_honey, I am wondering if my boy may be like that as he's a hairy traditional, kinda one of the reasons I don't want to spend loads in case it doesn't work for him.

TBH, I just want something ultra light and breathable that will keep him a bit clean without over heating him. I'm not sure how he was with the flies last year as he was turned out in Devon during the summer months and I didn't see him much, so guess I'm being a bit premptive just in case lol :)

As for Rhinegold, I have tried it and the rug got wrecked numerous times and just didn't stand up to the field mates playing with it. I've given up trying to fix it, hence why I don't choose them anymore :)

Oooo good suggestion Kenzo, neck is detachable which is perfect. I got a travel rug from here a couple of weeks ago for £15, haven't used it yet but looks lovely. So maybe this would be the same. Thanks :)

I bought a half price Mark Todd fly rug recently, it was £30 from Equitogs so worked out well under budget. Haven't really seen many flies about yet but so far so good.

Have to agree re rhinegold, i've had some of their stable, turnout and fly rugs and I've never had a problem, infact they're better then some of the much more expensive rugs :)

Ah fair enough, I think I just have to be careful coz of the rug rippers in my field and unfortunately, my experience of Rhinegold is that they're not very strong, so not suitable for my needs. Shame really coz they're pretty cheap, but false economy for me if they're getting destroyed all the time
