Fly spray, fly rug or both?

I have never found a fly spray that works to deter horse flys. Also they wear off really quickly. I only use spray for hacking out, and even then, I don't find it makes much difference.
 
Both - I would normally share the slightly sceptical "does it really work" train of thought but this year my old mare (TB X) kept coming in covered in massive bites. This is despite wearing a fly rug. I now coat her liberally in spray at the end of each day and this combined with the rug has cut the bites right back. Never known it so bad. Youngster doesn't seem to suffer nearly as badly and just wears a flysheet when out and spray on a hack. Logically you shouldn't need both but in practise, my mare has proved otherwise..
 
You save money in the long term by buying a rug, and a mask. Also, even the 'best' repellants still don't keep all the flies off them.

I just dab a bit of repellant on their bits and legs everyday, and a bottle lasts weeks. If I didn't have them in rugs a 500ml bottle would be gone on 2 horses every week.
 
My horse gets turnout out for me during the week so fly rug and mask, if its me I put spray on too

I love the Barrier Hygiene fly spray, but had NAF black one with DEET as it was on offer at Badminton and have to say I think its the best I've used
 
Neither. He hates me putting on fly spray and I've never found one that works anyway.
I did buy him a fly rug which he trashed the first day, never trashed a rug before or since.

I just bring him in on hot sunny days and he is quite happy. I can control his grass intake at the same time.

Whilst riding I just use my schooling whip to get flies off him and smack the ones I can reach.

I use both, fly rug & mask and deosect fly spray (it lasts forever) for bits that aren't covered or for hacking :)
 
Mine hasa rug and a mask but I still cover her with spray, not sure how effective it is after it has dried though. I want a fly sheet for me too, I was plagued by the evil little sods today!! They give me tourettes, i can't help but swear every time I slap one off me or Brooke.

I'm glad i'm not the only one, I do feel very mean as every other horse on the yard has a fly rug, but my boy goes without. I bought him 3, each one trashed in less then 3 days. He never does it with normal rugs, and i'm not going to buy a rug every week! - he does get sprayed though, but you would have thought I was shooting him with a taser gun the way he jumps about!
 
With my TB I use both, he has his bits, tummy, legs sprayed daily and has his fly rug and mask on. However my pony is sprayed and only wears a mask as he loves to destroy rugs.
