I mix up 1ltr sprays - apple cider vinegar 50%, dilute aloe vera in water 50%, then add essential oils 10-15 drops each and shake to mix.
It worked enough to stop clouds of midges eating me alive!

I think the vinegar is the most potent aspect….would make the skin bitter to taste for the bugs…i think theyre not keen on sucking up vinegar!

yes….i followed them around to monitor effectiveness while horseflies were buzzing around them but not landing a bite, they were put off.
im not sure how long it lasts yet though…hence why i added dilute aloe vera gel as a ‘stickiness’ agent in the mix, aswell as healing for any bites theyve already got.

The bugs are rampant where i am, bogland/wetlands, wild areas…its really not suitable for any mammals! So i make my own stuff as more affordable and better for sensitive skinned mare especially, lots of sprays bring her out in hives.

Im looking for citriodiol oil…pure preferably - to dilute with my own mix.

its a natural oil proven to strongly repel the really nasty biters, even ticks. Hard to source the pure oil, but worth tyring any brands with that oil in, rather than the weaker version citronella oil.

I have bought some essential oils, just haven't got round to making my own yet - have been doing similiar and diluting fly gel into water and that seems to have worked quite well but I might give this recipe a go?

i am finding the same here! Mine have been out without fly masks for 4 hours this afternoon abd 2 of the 3 have come in with weepy eyes. ? We have quite a lot of water around us and it seems to attract the flies.

I have used hedgewitch this week on 4 of my horses and phaser on the other 4. After 5 hrs the hedgewitch ones were still fly free. I get attacked frequently by horseflies and this is the first year I haven’t been bitten. Chemical free also

I used to use the horse sprays on me - spray the horse then a quick squirt for me too. Then I read the label. Really not good for humans! I was using the commercial ones though.
