Do any of you lovely people want to donate your fly spray formulas to me?

I am sick of spending £11 a time for a bottle and it lasting 2 weeks! Anything without tea in would be great as he is cream

Hi, i know the feeling, my horse has sweet itch and he lotions and potions were costing me a fortune! He is on tablets for the sweet itcha and i use my own fly spray which conssits of:
* 1/2 pint of v strong tea (you might want to just use water if you have a grey horse as it may stain)
* 2 table spoons of vinegar (balsamic is the v best but anything will do)
* a few drops of the following oils: lavendar, citronella, cedar, and tea tree ( don't over do it on your first solution incase your horse is sensitive to too much)
* 1 tea spoon on washing up liquid to break down the oils
* make up to 2 litres ( in a pop bottle) with cold water.

You can also put in garlic and cloves or anything els you think might help, i stopped using garlic as my horse is on holistic tablet which are neutralised by garlic!

The oils are quite expensive ( about £15 for all of them)but should last you the whole saeson as you olny need about 3-6 drops. You can get them from any health food shop such as holland and barrat.

I am going to try and get some neem oil this year as it is suposed to be excellent. It is found naturally in a tree (can't remeber, think india or somewhere hot) and it produces it to keep the flies off itself. DEET is also good.

Hope it works and obviously with anything new you might want to do a spot test first, but they are all natural ingredients so should be ok.

a simple recipe i use is cintronella oil (which u can get from most chemists or around 98p) and water mixed! does the job! xx

I use cintronella oil and baby oil. Make sure with cintronella oil you don't make up mixtures too strong as it can burn. I use a small bottle with a bottle of baby oil.

I use Theresa_F's recipe, I keep the thread in my favourites. Have cut and pasted this for you

<font color="red"> 5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle

250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - this can be halved to 125 mls if midges not too bad.

1 teaspoon of citronella oil
1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil
1 teaspoon of lavender oil
1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
1 teaspoon cedarwood oil

If on a real budget you can leave out the lavender, but I use it as it is good for the skin and smells so nice.

Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.

Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.

I have used this on people as well as horses, but please do a patch test first in case your horse reacts to any of the above ingredients.

Cost works out about £3.00 a litre - depending on how much avon is used, not as cheap as some receipes but this does work well and smells nice.

It really works, in fact so well that I now make the fly spray for everyone down the yard!! I spent out £60 on oils last year and I still have loads left. I was going through almost a bottle a week of the premade stuff and at £10 per bottle it really added up.

Good luck
