Fly spray recommendations.

I will be watching with interest as I have yet to find one I'm wowed by. I used to use Leovet and quite liked it but haven't seen it around recently (it also absolutely REEKED, my OH was very happy when I finished my last bottle)

It is very much trial and error. What works is a very individual thing, depending upon your horse, your land and its microclimate.

I use one type (DEET based), my neighbour over the way another (Neem based) - and neither spray seems effective in the other place - just different horses and different aspects to the fields.

I've got some essential oils to make my own (not got round to it yet) but you dilute a few drops of Peppermint, Lavender and Citronella oils into a mixture of cold tea and white vinegar. At the moment I have been diluting a few squirts of the fly gel into water and it seems quite cost effective as I get through lots!

Tri Tec is good.

I recently made a neem, citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree oil spray and my horse has stopped rubbing his hair off. So, seems to be working against the midges, not sure about flies and whatnot since they're not too bad yet.

Phaser power spray, only thing that works on my boy who has sweet itch. I made my own for a while for my other three but Phaser appears to be the one that is easiest to get hold of over here, so they’re all now having it.

I am using Naf off Deet Power spray this season. Seems to keep the flies away, but am waiting to see if it works for horse flies when they arrive. The only ones I don't believe in are the herbal / citronella based sprays as I have had no success with any of them.

I’ve been using this (only a few days ) but no flys on mines faces or sheaths and no stamping , It’s very messy to put on so defo buy the brush or wear gloves !

We use the EqWax repellents too and find them very effective. They brush, wipe or sponge on and last longer than many sprays as they don't evaporate quickly. Also, if you are environmentally minded they are all natural ingredients and free of single use plastic.

I tried tritec this year for the first time on my mare with SI, it's def. stopped her rubbing her face (she wears a rug as well).

I put some on myself one night last week when the midges were terrible and friend and I sat outside for a couple of hours. She was bitten and I wasn't at all.
