Fly spray that actually works?! Help.

Is there such thing? If so can someone please recommend me one, its starting to get warmer here and the flies are coming out in force .. It's driving my girl insane! I have previously used deet but tbh I didn't see much of an effect :s
 
I've found Deosect to be excellent, it's a concentrate that you dilute so very economical but strong so patch test first.

My pony had severe sweet itch last year but has been fine on the Deosect this year - I changed his rug recently and didn't re-apply the Deosect and he has gone itchy again - lesson learned and he is now coated in it again

You only need to re-apply every couple of weeks
 
I got mine from the vet but you can get it in agricultural shops like Countrywide and also on line, it's strong stuff but I don't think you need anything like a holding number to buy it

Dosage on the stuff from my vet is 5ml to 250ml of water and you aim to apply all in one go - I use a sponge or flannel to apply it. It's colourless so doesn't show on the horse, I can't stress how strong it is though and a patch test is an absolute must!
 
Ok, it's something to consider, she doesn't have sweet itch but they drive her bananas!
 
i used coopers last year and found it really good. when i got my second bottle i diluted it with water and sprayed it on as it is so expensive and it still seemed to work well.
 
Always made my own using citronella oil. One little bottle add a few drops to water, lasts a couple of summers.
 
Have posted before and vet informed us that none of the repellents work and recommended Flypor. Google it... please read IFUs. Its v good and it does work we used it on a mare that was losing hair due to being bitten so badly.Used on cattle etc.
 
I use Tritek14 on the hairy highland and it's brilliant. He's kept at a yard with 22 other liveries and is the only one with SI issues but the only now turned out without a fly rug!! Says it all really. I re-apply every few days or after he's got wet and so far so good (touches wood as I type!).
 
I second (third?) Coopers, awesome stuff. Everyone else is swarmed and pony swans along in ignorant bliss.
 
Coopers spot on, for cattle though :D Vet recommended it, stronger than horsey stuff, only needs applying once a month (about £40 and you need to by from vet or get a prescription for the non horsey stuff)
 
I was a real PowerPhaser girl but at £16 a pop for 1/2 l it was expensive. On the advice of this forum I bought Deosect from Farm Pet Place around £32 + £3 delivery. You make up to the 500ml with 10ml Deosect & water - use a syringe - an old calpol one is mine :p IT'S BRILLIANT.

We do both ours, and our field mate does her mahoosive warmblood. They never swish, stamp or do anything. The 3 others I offered it to (they declined) have horses doing all the above.

I figure it will last me around 8 years, doing 3 horses. Can't say fairer than that as it really does work!
