who uses a fly spray that actually works??
just need some recomendations really.
my TB is suffering, even with his fly rug, neck cover and mask on! He doesnt like being in so bringing him in is not really a option, just need some recomendations for a good fly spray, as the ones ive used have not really done much!
damn those flys!

coopers wiped on neat - its also the only stuff that doesn't ssem to affect my horse skin (she's a sensitive soul )
or for an all over spray - barrier super plus with avacado or NAF deet
some peeps i know swear by marigold spray (think planting marigolds in your veg patch to ward off pests ;)) but i've not tried it yet....

thanks posie_honey, i have used the barrier one with no luck, think the coopers one sounds good though.....im off to trawl the internet for the cheapest site for it!
never heard of marigold spray, might have a look into that too!

NAF Deet seems to be keeping the horseflies off mine at the moment. She was coming in with big lumps on her before so tack shop lady recommended Deet and so far so good.....

I’m hitting it from both sides now with NAF Deet and Barrier stuff! I think the problem I had before was that I just wasn’t using enough, I covered him in it this morning and that was just to stand in the barn! Keeping him out at night and in in the day but it seems he’s still getting eaten early morning/evening.

I’m getting eaten alive too, I have a bite on each arm and one on my foot!

Power phaser sounds good, what's in it?

just found this on it, if you google powerphaser horse spray it brings up some sites with it on, although reading reviews some peoples horses had allergic reactions to it!

I was despairing with our arab x who is such a thin skinned fly magnet..OH saw an advert for Global herbs Fly Free suppliment, so thought given the amount of fly spray/ointments/creams/gels we'd been going through trying to find something that works we'd try it. It's yellow like tumeric, and smells foul but I have to say it does seem to work brilliantly. He still gets a few flies on him but they don't seem to really bite at all, so I just do round his ears and under his tummy from girth to sheath with Power Phaser gel on a sponge every 2-3 days. Meanwhile the mossies and flies are still nibbling me like mad, I am so tempted to try the Fly Free myself!

powerphaser is good but be careful if you're asthmatic = it affects me really badly!!

garlic... ummm... google feeding garlic to horses and problems and you may decide it's not for you and your horse.... or you may decide its fine and you want to - but best get both sides of the story ;)

ETA - jsut sen above - i swear by their pollenex for my headshaker so i do rate their products - never tried the flyfree though...

I tried Power Phaser last year and it brought my coloured up in a huge rash, she has very sensitive skin though and it didn't affect my other horse in that way. However it didn't really work and neither did the NAF Deet one recommended on here. Have I just got mutant flies or something?

I have just bought the Nettex Advance which isn't working at all & leaves a horrible sticky residue on them when they get hot, so much so that I have to sponge it off before I can ride them kind of defeats the object!

Having exhausted most options over the years I am now going to try the Coopers one as a last resort.

im in the same boat, tried everything but coopers and power phaser, im liking the idea of the global herbs though. used to use their herbs years ago, and loved them, so might be worth trying them i think!

I make my own. Seems to work great and is much cheaper so you can use loads of it.

Go into stable yard and there is a sticky at the top of the page

I make my own. Mine are out in sweet itch rugs and face masks, but still around their teats and the end of their midline gets bitten, one also gets yucky sticky bites around her pasterns. Being delicate princesses they are allergic to deet based ones. For their midline I use sudocreme so it acts as a barrier to them biting. Stays put really well too. All over I use a mix of: avon skin so soft, 20 drops citronella, 10 drops tea tree, a glug of vinegar, a squeeze of aloe vera gel, 10 drops lavender, 30 drops neem, top up with about 750ml water. Must say it does seem to work well. Needs applying twice a day as the flys just don't seem to give up over here!

Hi

Pioneer Herbal do an inexpensive fly repellent that does actually work :D It is Neem based and has no nasty chemicals. I have kept sweet itch at bay on my Welsh Cob this year using Pioneer Herbal products. I started using it last year but only once the blighters had started to bite. He lives out 24/7 without a rug but with access to a field shelter which I also douse with the Pioneer Herbal spray. It kills horse flies - zap and midges hate it.

Coopers is pretty good but pricey - when i worked at World Horse Welfare we always used it for sweetitch sufferers with good results.

The other one I've found pretty good is Pre Itch fly spray from Equinat - soothes and repels

I've also used Deosect insecticide in the past when flies are really bad - it kills on contact but i do worry what it does to my horse as its so powerful.

Make sure you do a patch test with any treatment first.

The only spray I have found so far that actually works is Nettex advanced, I only need apply it at the most every 24 hours. It does leave an oily residue if you use too much (..small price!) so i tend to lightly mist over the body and pay more attention to his underside!! Mine lives out 24-7 and the only other thing I use is a good fly mask. He has been relaxed and happy in very fly prone paddocks since I started to use this
