Please don't think for even a moment that I am complaining about the lovely weather, but- now that Clyde is allowed out after 9 weeks box rest, he is being plagued by flies! I have a small amount of a branded fly spray left but would prefer to make my own. I seem to remember posts offering recipes containing citronella? Can anyone help? Also, I bought him some apple cider vinegar because I read it was good for older horses, and was amazed to read on the container that it could also be used as a fly spray! Has anyone used it? Thanks.

I make my own.It works very well.I havent brought branded fly spray for years.
1x 10ml bottle of Citronella.
6 Tea bags
1x Bottle of cheap malt vinegar.
Some people put a dash of washing up liquid in.

Boil kettle put into large jug with Teabags.Wait untill gone stone cold.Pour in Citronella and Vinegar.Give it a stir and put into a 2ltr bottle then use with a spray bottle. You get about 2ltr's for about a quid.

mum, I asked Lucy for the recipe but I believe it's something like this (make it in the spray bottle)

1/3 bottle of detol
1 - 2 teaspoon citronella
1 teaspoon teatree oil
1 teaspoon of lavender
1 teaspoon of cedarwood
top up the bottle with water and away you go!

just a small point - but if your horses live out over summer, putting washing up liquid in fly spray will strip the coat of some of it's natural weatherproofing oils - but the cedarwood is really good with citronella and lemongrass, have heard the teabags work too although never tried it.

I just use citronella and baby oil, 10ml cintronella with a bottle of oil. Works fine for my it. I know people who just mxi citonella with water, definately the cheapest and easiest option, I haven't tried it with water thought, but they said it works.
