As there are a lot of posts re the pesky horse fly, I thought I would recommend Tritec. Before I say anything I AM NOT anything to do with the company!
I begrudgingly bought a bottle at Badminton, and at £40 a pop, was hoping it wasn't money wasted. However it is proving worth every penny.
The horse flies have only just come out in Shropshire, but are out in hordes. For the last 2 days I have used Tritec when I have ridden and it really does work - I would say the irritation to the horses was down by 80% and having just rode and lead this morning, only had to swat 2 between the horses on an hours hack.
My black cob gets targeted because of his colour and riding him at this time of year is usually horrid as he gets so distressed, and tossing his head in irritation, but today he was like normal. It was like the fly spray was a shield - I could see them buzzing around, but rarely landed, and if they did, flew away instantly.
As an experiment I also put some on my arms and that worked too, and touch wood, have had no reaction to it.
The chemicals in the spray do worry me, but as the horse fly season is relatively short, I feel the benefits outweigh the risk. And although it is expensive, I had though of buying some ride on fly sheets, so counterbalances that.
I doubt for a minute it lasts 14 days, as rain/rolling etc will surely affect it, but I am hoping the bottle will last for the horse fly season when used just for ridden work - if it stays on in the filed even just for that day, that is also a bonus.
