Fly sprays.......

If you look in the stable yard section, there is a stickie which has dozens off fly sprays listed.

I use:

Avon Skin So Soft
Citronella Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Vinegar
Water

Power Phazer by Leovet!!! I have, like lots of other people, have tried so many sprays over the years, I now use Power Phazer which comes in a spray or gel. It absolutely stinks :), but it definately works! I work in a saddlery and it is by far our best seller.

15mls citronella
1 teaspoon washing up liquid
5 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons meths
1 cup of strong tea
2 litres of water.

Works a treat!

I also swear by Leovet's Power Phaser - it's not the cheapest and smells horrible but does actually work, including repelling horse flies.

The Barrier fly spray or Effol fly blocker are both very good.

The best "shop bought" spray i've ever used is a german make called "Derby" (they make a great hoof balm too), i used it a lot about 10 years or so ago, was fantastic stuff, but i can't find it any where- if anyone knows of where you can get hold of these please let me know!

This year i've also made my own recipe fly spray which, i was quite surprised as to how well it keeps the flies off- i can't remember the exact quantities as it's written down at home- but i've used strong tea with added mint tea, splash of vodka/tiny drop of washing up liquid for mixing the oils, couple drops lavender, eucalyptus, citronella, tea tree, vinegar- i did a patch test first to make sure they weren't allergic or anything!

I use leovet power phaser which seems to be ok.
for the underside of my mare I use a homemade recipe as the bought fly sprays are too much and she reacts to them here.

15ml Citronella
1 Tbs Dishwashing Liquid
4 Tbs Vinegar
250ml strong Black tea
Lavender Oil
Tea Tree Oil
Add to 2 ltrs Water

I've always used the Barrier Super Plus but that doesn't seem to be working this year, so think i'll have to change.

Anybody used the Power Phazer with a sensitive skinned horse??

xx

Barrier super plus is very good but expensive when trying to cover a shire x so now he has a sweet itch rug and I just spray his legs/tummy. I try and get him to wear a fly mask but he's not keen.

I'm also going to have fly rug treated with pyrethrin?? to deter the flies evenmore. The horse flies especially have been dreadful this year :-( and are hugely attracted to a big black horse xx

I also meant to add that i also have some deosect that i treat them with from time to time (use it for my little coblet who has hairy legs!)- it's really economical as you have to mix it up with water to make a spray or you can sponge on (which i find easier)- they never have any flies around them when they have that on!
