Has anyone had a horse with fly strike ? Vets on the way ,Horse was fine this morning ,Checked her this evening ,Maggots and bad smell.

yep up in his boy bits caught it early though and treated myself with hibiscrub and aloe vera gel s far seems to be keeping it at bay and soothing the sore bits as well

This looks and smells terrible,Blisters all down one side of her tail ? Im really worried,Vet on the way but it could be a couple of hours.

Diluted Jeyes fluid poured on the affected area will make them "leave town" in a hurry and kill most of them at the same time. Clean the area thoroughly and apply fly cream/maggot spray (you'll need to get these from an agricultural merchant)

If there is an open wound then I definitely wouldn't put Jeyes on it; yes it will kill the maggots but it will sting your horse!

Just wait for the vet - he will give the horse an injection which will kill the maggots. He made need some antibiotics also. Hope all works out well but don't tamper just yet - leave it for the vet.

Thanks for all advice and help,Vet been here for hours,Did as much as he could,She is going into hospital 2moro ! I cant belive how quick fly strike happens ! This is a show pony that is pamperd to within an inch of its life ! won a big class on sunday last week,Been in as getting a little fat ,Seemed fine yesterday ,But i thought their was a slight smell but couldnt fined anything ? And now she is very poorley. In 35 yrs of owning horses i have never come across this before ?

We have horses out with one sheep, the sheep seems to get it every year to some degree, but have never come across it in horses. We use teatree oil on the sheep, which usually shifts them. Thank you for posting as will now make sure that I check the horses as well as the sheep.

Have had this with elderly pony--eggs laid in heels but spotted before they hatched into maggots
Blame the stupid weather, watching sheep like a hawk.

We are off to the Vets hospital this morning,I dont know how long she will be in But i know shes in the best place,She has no tail or hair on it now! So showings off for a long while ,But i love her and if she could never show again i dont care,Theirs more to life than a red rossette !

Thank you so much,She has been in hospital nearly a week now,And i hope to bring her home 2morow,Alot of people visiting with their horses have been shocked, As like me they had never come across Fly strike in a horse,Alot of people had never ever heard of it full stop. It looks alot better But its still really sore. All the poison has gone ,It really was disgusting.I may put another post warning people. Thanks again for asking after her.
