Does anyone know of any products that may help prevent this please? They would need to be suitable for use in a sensitive area (sheath).

The only thing that I really rate for me is Phaser fly spray not sure if you can use on sensitive areas though sorry Jo

I used some gel fly repellant last night which seems to have helped buthe was stabled last night which always helps any way. I can't keep the poor boy stabled 24/7 though.

The Sudo Cream or, my parents get a bright yellow fly cream the vet gave it to them after a dog bit off one of the sheep's ears, It has all sorts of healing stuff in it to. It is for sheep but you can pick it up in most county sores, It great on the horses (apart from the colour) sorry cant think of its name!

Thanks Charlie77 will speak to my vet if I have no joy with the sudocream. Although I'm sure neddy will love me when he has a bright yellow sheath, bless him.

I would thoroughly wash sheath with a sheath cleaner and warm water. The warm water loosens any muck. flies will be less attracted to it.

Dry and apply savlon or sudo cream to the area, lather it on, but warm up the cream first, my horse kicks when it is put on cold! Liberally spray with fly repellent. I use battles super plus which seems ok in sensitive areas.

I have to wash my boy every 2 weeks in the summer and its not my favourite job.

Thank you - he has melanomas all in the sheath area which make it even worse, I am currently cleaning it twice a week but am still getting fly eggs being laid there. Poor boy is very unhappy with it all.

I use the Phaser on Grace's colic scar and also near her udders where she is very sensitive and has no fur... might be worth trying. It is the only fly spray that I have found to be effective.

My boy had melanomas in his sheath (and maggots once too - gross!) and the battles used to keep him free - he used to lift his leg up so I could put it on too (weirdo!) He did have a permanently bright yellow sheath though although I don't think he cared!

clean it then use a few drops of tea tree in warm water that will work coz it is a fly repellant anti fungal anti bacterial and it will also sooth and protect!

P lifts his leg so you can clean it too, I think it must be really uncomfortable for him, we have also had maggots gross gross gross but its not through lack of cleaning, the flies just seem to attack him. Can I ask what happened with the melanomas in your boys case, did you just leave them or did the vets offer any treatment?
