I have just started riding my mare in on of those fly veil things that goes over the ears (the ones that are often associated with showjumpers) andthe difference in her is amazing!

I am not affiliated yet but most of the dressage i do is run under BD rules so i was just wondering if anyone knows if i can use them?

Any help much appreciated!

no - and personally i cant see how they would make a difference, especially in the winter

You can for working in but thats it.

Tempi- the reason they are probably not allowed is you could plug your horses ears and the fly cover would hide it!

Gutted!!!!
I think it is something to do with reducing the wind in her ears or something.
Since i have ridden her in them, in circumstances where she would normally be leaping around spooking at everything being very tense, she is very very relaxed and has spooked once since wearing them (having a lesson when very windy and one of the fillers that was in school took off and flew towards her).
The change in her has really been amazing!

I've found it improves my very irritable horse. He HATES his forelock tickling his ears and even when I plait it he still has some issues. I've found the fly veil helps and once I've got his concentration he's fine.

you can plug your horses ears without having to use the fly vail though !!

it helps my horse indoors - blocks the sound out but then i showjump so im allowed them !!

Not sure if that was to me or not but I don't use the fly veil for noise- just to stop his ears getting tickled or irritated

He's good with noise- he just likes to have an excuse to be irritable. Tbh I don't use it much as he's got a lot more relaxed and softer and concentrates more in his work.

Shes not quite so bad without them away from home but she is still very very tense which obviously we get marked down for.
She is just so so much better with them on.

Does anyone know if they are BE dressage legal as she will be evented this year?

you can apply in writing for exceptional circumstances to compete in them. The same applies to FEI compeitions which is why some of the international dressage horses wear ear plugs

We used a fly veil for a horse in BE dressage (run under BD rules)
We got permission from the vet and just took the letter to the dressage steward at each event.

What do the exceptional circumstances/or letter from the vet have to be as i'm guessing for some reason my horse goes really well in them is not one, as i don't know if there is anything medical behind it all.

FEI allows them if the conditions require. All the horses at the European championships this year wore them. BD does not allow them at all, but I think they should rather like they allow nose nets - for horses who need them. Some headshakers go much better with fly veils on.
