Hi,

I'm a bit of a lurker and don't post on here that much.

Anyway I've got 2 border collies and we are going to have a go at a beginners flyball session with our local team.

Anybody had a go? Not sure what to expect so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I took my staff X a few years ago - it was great fun, but once she had learnt to operate the release pad for the ball, she spent the whole session running round releasing everyone else's ball and stealing the balls!!

We only went a couple of times because it was an hour and a half each way and not very do-able after work

I am a flyball addict!!!!
I started in 2007 with my collie cross and it is so much fun. If your dogs love balls and have basic obedience then you will get on fine. Basically the dogs have to learn to trigger the "box" which releases the ball first. Then they learn to go up and back to you over 4 hurdles. These can be different heights according to the size of the dogs in your team (when you get to team level) . If you look on the British flyball Website, there is a video to show you more about it. They also have a forum.
What club have you joined?
If you read "Dogs Diary" post from Monday (Ithink I posted it on Monday) you'll read how my Lab has recently learned to do flyball.
Do let me know how you get on.
If you get as hooked as I am you'll find yourself travelling the country to tournaments.lol.

Hi Goya

We are going to a session run by the Doncaster Bellestars. We haven't joined yet, we might get banned after Thursday night! It's the obedience bit I'm worried about really. They both come back when called and they both live for their ball or frisbee of lid of the top of a bucket (anything what can be thrown and brought back really) but we have never been to any structured obedience training.

It's really just to give them something to do really and to get the opportunity to socialise with other dogs.

All I can say is its LOUD! lol,
I do agility and some shows have flyball on too, and all us agility folk go and watch! All the dogs bark like crazy they are soooo hyped up! But it looks like a lot of fun.
My mum tried it with one of our collies, but the dog was scared of the release box, and refused to touch it! What a wuss!

I would love to do agaility or flyball with my two!
My little terrier would be fab at both, love to take my choccy lab but he is a bit of a handfull around other dogs!! Just get far to exctited!!

why not give it a go? Check out websites to find a club near you. Both are such fun and gives the dogs good exercise as well as fun (You get lots of exercise too---LOL)
Britisgh Flyball association and Agilitynet are both good.
