Not that I am an expert, merely reporting what I have read about, but a lot of it is about preparing for teaching the flying change. Things you can do to prepare are:
- make sure the horse is confident in trot to canter transitions on either rein, so that you can ask for canter or counter-canter as and when you want
- make sure the horse is confident in walk to canter transitions on either rein, so that you can ask for canter or counter-canter as and when you want.
For both of these to start off ask for canter or counter-canter where it is easiest that you might get it (e.g. counter-canter on an inside track) and then move to more demanding shapes (e.g. 20 metre cicle, or straight line up the centre line).
If that works well and the horse has clearly understood the aids for either canter then give the flying change a go.

Good luck!
