Has anyone got some actual good ideas about which flyspray to use??? Year after year I think about this but never find one I really can trust!!!

I love old fashioned methods too, I currently rely on citronella and cold black tea mixed together - so far this is my fave!!!
Any helpful tips??? x x x
 
Powerfazer (sp)??? is what we use to defend again the buzzing fat bitey flies and horseflies - comes in white with red and black squirty bottle - it smells so strong I dont even want to go near my horse when hes covered in it! - It does appear to keep them at bay - my horse is a seriously thin skinned TB.

Mum also is a whizz at concocting white vinegar and black tea which works well on midges too
 
I'm old fashioned too, and I use citronella mixed into sweet almond base oil, which I find works well, and I can wipe it on me as well.

However, here we have some really vicious bity burrowing midge thingies, and so once a year (about now) I use the cattle pour-on stuff on them (on veterinary advice, before you all start screaming at me

). You need to be careful not to use it just before a show, as it takes a while to disappear, but it works well.
 
We use Shoo Fly, which we buy as a concentrate and then dilute in water.

It smells really nice and is identical to a product called Zedan which I was given in Germany to protect against big biting fly's a few years ago.

Looking at our two the other evening compared to the horses in the fields either side, the fly count was significantly lower on ours.

This is my home made spray which is effective for flies and midges.

5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle

250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad.
2 teaspoons of citronella oil -
2 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil
2 teaspoons of lavender oil
2 teaspoons of tea tree oil
2 teaspoons of cedarwood oil
2 teaspoons of bog myrtle oil - not essential but adds to midge repelling properties.

Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.

Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.

I have used this on people as well as horses, but please do a patch test first in case your horse reacts to any of the above ingredients.

Cost works out about £3.50 a litre - not as cheap as some receipes but this does work well and smells nice. Get the Skins so soft when on offer to save money and I buy my oils in 100 ml bottles to get wholesale prices
 
I agree With Phaser fly spray (sp) its fab, only one that works on my black horse, hubby refuses to come near him when I have sprayed him!
 
I use super plus (white with green writing) - it has avocado oil in it and leaves their coats really soft and smells lush

This is a recipe Druid uses -

Per 500ml

150ml of Malt Vinegar
3 Capfuls of Dettol
Small squirt of Washing up liquid
30 drops of citronella oil (from Boots)
30 drops Tea Tree Oil (from Boots)
15 drops Garlic Oil (most healthfood places have all these oils or else Boots)
150ml of Avon Skin so Soft and Fresh Bath Oil
Then fill the rest with strong cold tea (Use 2 bags per 500ml plus one over, so for 2l you'd use 9 bags)

Shake well, and give a quick shake before application.
 
i use this and it seems to work
1 1/2 pints of tea (made with 5 teabags)
5ml tea tree oil
8ml citronella
can be diluted if needed
dont use vinegar as i think it might sting if there are any sore bites

and double garlic in her feed

no flies on tab and she gets really stressed over them
