Hi everyone.
I have a 25year old tb who is in good health generally, as he has got older ( past 4 years) he gets fly strike in his sheath. Yesterday was the 5th time this year of treating him and we are at a loss as to why he is getting it as it is pretty unusual for it to be reoccurring. I use all the usual fly sprays/creams and sheep fly strike paste but as of yet have not found anything that has worked for him.

Vets were treating him for it but unfortunately I had a vet at the beginning of this year who injected sedation in the artery which left my poor boy down for over an hour, fitting. I'm extremely lucky he got back up again and is mainly unaffected by this ordeal but now after so many years of being a star for the vet he has been labelled by the vets as "dangerous to treat" as he is petrified of vets- understandably. So I am having to treat him myself which we are managing but isn't ideal as I'd really like bloods done to see if there could be any reason or immunity that is causing the flys to attack him.

I'd really appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on how to help my chap and/or if anyone has experienced sedation in the artery instead of the vein.

Many thanks. :)

Good wash out, and then squirt a cheap ivermectin wormer inside the sheath - works an absolute treat. My old boy has had a few episodes of fly strike now he's a bit older, and presumably smellier, and the ivermectin sorts out the wrigglers, so the soreness can heal.
