hello!

I have bred my first foal this year, a gorgeous (in my eyes anyway) filly by It's Without Doubt out of our British Riding Pony mare, Bradmore Chika.

We are very keen to show the mare and foal and have a few scheduels for shows we are interested in, the only problem is that I have no idea what a broodmare and foal class involves! Can anyone enlighten me?

thanks.

how big is the mare? How big to you expect your foal to grow to? This will determine what classes you can do.
You will need a handler for both the mare and foal, mare plaited and in a bridle (usually a double), foal/filly slip on foal, foal unplaited although if later on you may get a small plait in the tail.
Handler clothing, tweed jacket, smart trousers, suitable footwear (jod boots are great), hard hat (beagler/bowler), cane/gloves, shirt and tie.
Judges are usually very good in brood mare/foal classes they will get you to show both off without splitting/stressing either.
You will be required to walk both round, trot along the long side of the ring.
Judge will ask you to stand in the centre of the ring, stand up the mare and foal so the judge can see (not square), the will then ask you to walk away from the judge, turn and then trot around the ring and back into the line up in the middle of the ring. If your foal won't run out on his own you can take mum with him.
They will judge the mare and foal separately.

Good luck, it's good fun!!

Thanks for that. Curly will be a small hunter type.

When you go round the edge of the ring, does the foal go beside, in front of or behind the mare? It wouldn't be a problem to separate the mare and foal as they are both very relaxed about that already.

If we are running out the mare and foal separately, after the initial line up when we are called to do our 'individual show', do we just stay standing forward with the foal while the mare does her show and vice versa or is there anywhere in particular you have to stand to be out of the way?

Thanks for your help.

if your foal will follow behind just keep him a little way behind, I tend to keep the mare in a nice slow, even trot and keep an eye on the foal, if he settles then you can run a bit faster.

If when you take the mare out your foal won't stand and wait just take him too, the judge won't mind, and vice versa when it's the foals turn, if he won't go on his own make him follow mum. Have a little practice at home. Practice standing the foal a little way from his mum.

Please post some pics of your baby!

That is great, thanks so much for your help. How do you post photos if you don't have them on a website you can link to? Spot the newby!

Here she is at 6 weeks old being tied up for the first time ever - you can see it didn't exactly stress her!
