Foal coats

Typical, when I want a photo I can't find it!
Arab foals seem to be frequently clipped before they shed out (head and neck only, which looks so weird) I imagine this is for stud photos and for showing, although perhaps they are entirely clipped for showing.

Maybe it's just an arab thing then. I've never seen it done in hunter foals, or sports horse foals either.

The mind boggles eh??

gosh, i cant believe people would actually do that

There were a few at the futurity that were either clipped or rugged from the day they were born as they had lovely patch free coats when they should of been changing.

Springfallstud...........have seen clipped foals at the North O The Border Foal Show held in Scotland. It tends to be in November, so people have been known to clip out their foals!

Personally I would not do that, but that is just me...........

Not necessarily,

we have a couple of foals that have been shed out for a while now, and others that look moth eaten, the later foals don't seem to grow nearly as thick a coat and shed out much quicker especially if it co-incides with the longest days, whilst the early ones grow such thick coats and seem to take forever to shed.

Ours all live out regardless of the weather so prefer mother nature takes control of what they need........

Most foals at top breeding shows and sales etc are clipped out, mainly to get rid of the foal coat and leave a nice true coat on the day/s of the show, it just enables the foal to look stunning as they do when their foal coat has gone but yes it is silly and vain but if you want the big prices that's often what it takes

I know that some TB consignors clip foals for the sales - esp. in the USA. Also in Kenticky, we used to body clip (as it says really, neck and body off) ALL of the foals at the start of the hotter weather - believe me, they needed it!! The heat and humidity would probably make a foal with a woolly coat very poorly!

ETS - I meant to add that I've not seen any clipped for showing though
