Foal EHV type 4

My foal has been swapped and positive for EHV type 4.
He’s been isolated and given antibiotics and metacam.
The vet scanned his lungs and could see a dark circle but said the size isn’t concerning. I’m assuming this is some type of pooling of fluid?
She said there is roughening on the lungs.
Tonight she’s messaged to say that the equine internal specialist has looked at the scans and is worried :/ so they are both coming back tomorrow to rescan.
He’s 7 months on the 16th.

What could this mean?

I’ve got myself worried.

Has anyone else had experience with this?

He’s ok in himself, a little dull and not really eating with weight loss but it is the message about vet being concerned that has me worried.

i am no vet but it sounds like a good dose of antibiotics and rest will work. fingers crossed

Sorry to read your foal is so unwell, can you get him admitted in to horspital for more intensive therapy?

I was having a good chat with a stud manager and then my vet about EHV the other day .
I always thought a closed herd would be fine . But what they both confirmed is that EHV can lay dormant and only surface in moments of stress . One of those moments being weaning .
So that’s why they recommend in foal mares to be kept separate from weanlings / 1 & 2 year olds .
Most weanlings / youngsters will be ok after a couple of weeks as long as they get medical intervention. Which your foal is getting . Fingers crossed he improves quickly x

He’s NEGATIVE! Yay but he has pneumonia bloods are ok and back to normal! Just need to get him to eat feed he’s eating hay x

Great news. Mine was suspecting of having EHV as it was the ataxic type. Sadly it was wobblers and he was pts but the whole yard was scanned and he and two others from about 25 were carrying EHV. The vet said 33% of the equine population are carriers but not all are shredders.
