Have just seen an ad for foal for sale - not even 12 months old, loose jumping about 18 inches or so. Is this normal and im just a bit out of touch? Is this something that would happen in the wild? Although circling and jumping in an arena wouldnt. Cant decide if im outraged or not! Cant post pic as on phone.

I would worry about the damage to joints etc. Mind you, lots of TBs are being backed and raced at not much older than that! :(

Not uncommon for top stock no. You'll find it's a one off thing.

I personally don't see the point in it, after knowing countless cob babies who will jump 5 bar fencing freely ;)

I wouldn't do it personally but quite a few people do. It depends whether they were just playing or actually being made to jump though (ie loose schooled with a whip etc). As long as it's not done often I don't think it causes that much harm, but as I said before I wouldn't do it myself :)

Lol of course you can't decide because you have no idea under what circumstances this photo arose.

When I take selling videos and photos I take my foals into the arena to photograph and video them. My arena always has jumps up in it which I always lower incase the foals do take a wrong turn and end up cantering towards a jump. When my foals go into the arena, it's not necessary to shoo them around, they get very excited and think it's a fun place to be. And yes a number of my foals have jumped over the jumps, and no they are not coerced, and yes I do keep that part of the video or take a photo if they do so.

I have photos of my then 11month old foal jumping! I turned him loose in the sand school and someone had left jumps up thought nothing of it next thing I know lunatic he was was jumping them! Little monster

my foal was 10 month and he full on jumped a single pole that was on the ground in the arena i didnt even realise i took the photo untill i looked back through my phone later that day.

When Ben was 18 months old, he took a 4 ft hedge with a 6 ft drop on the other side to get to the bullocks... He thought he was a part of their herd... Bless him:rolleyes: absolutely was not made to do it but I wish I has a piccy of it :D

I have had foals jump over small objects in the field - including the water troughs!
I also had five weaned foals jump out over a 3'9" tiger trap following my old mare who was meant to be nannying them! They all jumped it beautifully.
They are not going to do any harm to their joints if it is a rare thing for them to do, anymore than they are going to harm their joints with the antics they get up to out in the field.

Tsk... Meant to be nannying them but led them astray:rolleyes: naughty nanny:rolleyes::D. I remember when my ex rang up grumbling that he was causing a stampede and had jumped this hedge... He was expecting an 'oh my gosh darling, is he ok, are the bullocks ok?' All I said was... 'How much did he clear it by and what was his landing like??!' :D:D
