Poor foalie is on box rest for OCD. Anyone know how long it's likely to be? Vet would just say 'weeks'. :( He is 9 months old and has OCD of the stifle. Xrays show no bone chips, just a little rough area.

Awhh - has he still got his mum in with him? or is he on his own? Just wondering if he could do with a friend?

No idea about his issue, Janet George may be worth a PM she is always really helpful with foal issues.

One of the posters in Breeding was posting about this last year. Can't remember who, sorry. Be worth an 'ocd' post in there to garner replies though....

Oh that sucks :( poor you and poor foalie! No experience in this but perhaps post in the breeding section?

Lots of get well vibes from this end!

It was me! We had rough area on her hocks in oct last year!
Two months rest it took, she made it clear when she was ready to go out.
Recommend MSM and bone kare supps.

Well that's a pile of poops lass.

Sorry, no experience (to date!), but wanted to wish foalie and you the best.

Thanks. He belongs to one of my liveries, but I love him to pieces. He's a star.

Thanks. At this time of year when the horses are going out for three hours in small groups, he always has either his Mum or his 'uncle', the gelding who's adopted him on either side of him with big talk bars between them, so he's pretty chilled so far. :)

I will have a search through the threads, thanks.

Thanks. I had around 8 weeks in my head for some reason. How old was she?

I've had a couple of foals in on box rest - no experience of OCD I'm afraid, but I have to say that having them in actually did them a lot of good. Two in particular spring to mind.

One was a 9month old filly who ruptured her extensor, and was in for four months. She went from being a grumpy, snappy handful, to a soppy, cuddly people person. She loved fuss, learnt how to be tied up, all about rugs, and was an absolute joy to handle by the end of her time in.

The other was a 3month old colt who fractured his skull and was in for seven months. He was the same as the filly - a bit of a ****, and a total handful, and he ended up being a real pleasure to do by the end of his time in.

They had different company as much as possible, so that they didn't get bored, and I left radio 4 on for them (as I do with the other box rests) all day. They also had lots of toys and things to keep them occupied, which I changed around every week to keep them interested.

It's horrid having babies on box rest, but they do all seem to cope remarkably well.

Thanks, Starzaan. I have been worried about it sending him loopy, but at the moment he's being really good. I am having to give him antibiotics by syringe every day (for an unrelated scrape he got the day he was diagnosed), and he's being very good about everything. He is very well handled in any case and absolutely adores being fussed and scratched.

my yearling was on box rest after fracturing her splint.

She broke through her stable door
one day!

She settled though and made a full recovery.

I wish yours a speedy recovery

Thank you. I am glad your yearling recovered okay. I guess we just take every day as it comes. Four days gone already and so far, so good :)

Mine is on box rest for exactly the same thing, he has to be in for 6 weeks. He's 9 months old to, and has had X-rays done to stifles, and hocks.
He's been in 4 weeks now, he has a small horse ball in his stable, which keeps him occupied, and takes his frustration out on that...but he's been pretty good tbh...
I did have to give him a small amount of bute when he first went onto box rest..
He appears to be feeling alot better now anyway, rearing and bucking in his stable!!
Only two weeks left before re-evaluating him, hopefully he can then go out. Poor fella...

I will keep my fingers crossed for him. He's nearly there hopefully.

Poor little lad. The specialist at Rossdales has decided he has to go in for an operation to put a camera in the joint and to tidy things up in there. I am so upset for him, and to make things worse I cannot go with him because I can't leave this place for more than an hour or so at this time of year. :(
