My Belgian warmblood competition mare is in foal to a Hanoverian stallion (due April). I just wondered about you knowledgable people's opinions on which stud book to register foal with? If I register with the British Hanoverian Horse Society, I have to take mare and foal for grading, for the mare to be graded into main stud book so the foal would have pink papers, and I *think* if I register with the BWP I just send off details to Belgium with samples for DNA testing? I like the idea of the BHHS as the foal has been born and bred here, is there anything else that should be considered? Anyone got any opinions on which i should go for? Thanks.

Hi there, that is probably the best bet as the BWP will not allow full papers if the stallion is not BWP approved- which you will know if he is or not.

I registered my British born foal with AES instead of BWP- mare was BWP and sire SBS, as it was double the price with BWP. Also the foal is uk born anyway- and if he were to attend grading for stallion purposes I would not be packing him off to belgium for that. If you register with UK studbook the foal will be eligible for British bred classes.

I would also check that the BWP do not have to inspect to foal- they do over there before branding and registering them (they stopped branding a few years back).

I have not a clue about hanovarian books!

The stallion is approved with all the European studbooks, so that would not be an issue. I've just found out that I would have to either take the mare and foal to Belgium (no, thanks) or send by post photos of foal, a drawn and written description from my vet, and some tail hairs for them to DNA test. Methinks I will go down the Hanoverian route! Hopefully she will grade into the studbook and the foal will be eligible for pink papers. Does anyone know when the Hanoverian regional foal shows are in the UK ? Cant see it on the website. Thanks

Hi there, She is by Sir Lui (a graded son of Silvio) out of a Wendekreis mare. I will be more than happy if the foal is a carbon copy of her! I have put her to Dr Dolittle so am excited to see what will pop out!

Ahh lovely. A breeder in Belgium I bought a horse off had a sir lui x fleuri du Manoir- the mare was very successful at dressage so along the right lines then!

Tbh the BWP book is heavily sj biased, which is my love. I think you know which one to choose!

Good luck x
