Hi Guys, Been a way for a long while but....
And
Not looking to rug up now, but....
She is currently measuring 3'9" rugs, i dont want to be left without one if the dreaded white stuff comes, so what size do ya think i should try and get???

L x

My weanlings are in 4'9 to 5' rugs on the rotten wet days. I have quite a lot of different sizes though so I can move them into the larger ones if/when they outgrow the little rugs they're in at the moment.

3'9 is tiny (cute!!), mine are in that size as newborns in the spring. What breed of foal do you have? I thought it was a TB mare you bred from?

I'm also surprised that shes only in a 3'9.

My arab foal is 2 days older than your foal and she has outgrown her 4'3 rug (she only tried it on too,) fortunately it was a hand me down, so no money wasted.

I think you need to re-measure her to be honest! I'm thinking she should be in a 4'6 or 4'9.

My foalie is in 4'6 and about to outgrow it, she's only had it a few weeks, going for a 5' one next but will be out of foal size rugs by then, going for an amigo type rug as they are not so big round the shoulder area, only getting the lightweight type, ie no filling, just want it to keep her dry realy, not for warmth. Anyone any other ideas on makes?

We have a varierty of foals about some born as early as Feb and the youngsest middle of May.
The smallest is in a 5ft the biggest (it is an enormous foal at around 15 hands) is in a 5ft 6.
We use the Amigo or Rhino pony rugs as you seem to be able to get away with buying a bigger size for them to grow into without it being too big round the front.
If you get stuck in an emergancy give me a shout i would probably have something you could borrow until you got sorted out

My Foal is 6mths old & a whopping 5ft 6in!! I have a Masta rug for him at the minute.....not sure it will last long! Just a rain sheet rather than a thicker one. He's not wearing it yet, but will when the weather turns worse. Fits quite well, but he is quite a stonker of a Foal, so may not suit a smaller foal.
When his growing slows abit, i too would go in Horseware as such a lovely rug....my mare has them & they are easily the best rugs!!!

My foal is 4 and a half months and just about to out grow her 4'3 rug she is dinky! She has only been in said rug for about 5 weeks!

My foal has a 4ft 9 Mark Todd rug but not in it all the time
the mark todd has a good degree of growing room in them with clip fastening at two points and buckle up straps so keeping fingers crossed that she will get a few months out of it.

good luck

I second the Mark Todd. They are adjustable and not overly deep either. They do have back leg straps though which you can obviously remove.
The one we bought it for is nearly out of a 5 ft so another one will probably be required soon.
They are nude at the moment again as it has turned so warm but here is the one we got (hope this works)

I thought your foal was by Avanti Amorous Archie RID - or am I going mad? 3ft 9ins is very small - are you sure you've measured right? Mine were in that size at a month old. Ditto the Mark Todd or Horseware ranges, for make recommendations.

i wouldnt buy anything until you are going to use it...! ive made that mistake, thinking i'm very smart!

my willow was in a 4'3 when she was about the same age as your wee one... so maybe you need to re-measure?

as for the rug itself, the best ones i've found for willow have been the amigo ones- although buy a size up from what he measures, as they come up small. ;)

thanks guys, i know she is a midgit, mum didnt do her too well what can i say.
Pretty sure after all these years i have remebered how to measure rugs.
She is just small and perfectly formed thank you tho.

Well off i go again......

not much smaller than my willow ;)

if you measured her yesterday then she's probably bigger today! :D

aaaanyways... i bought willow a 4'3 last winter.... it was MASSIVE but i made it fit... knots in the surcingles etc etc... and it fits her this year, now that she is 5'. i think they had sewn the wrong size label on it.

basically it was a whole foot too big, but it was fine all winter, and will do her this winter.

if you are going to buy a rug now in advance and she is 3'9 then i would buy a 4'3. thats a couple of sizes up... easy to make it fit if still a bit big, but leaves room for a growth spurt.

ets: if doing this then i would go for a rug like derby house or something... cheap-ish, with highly adjustable chest straps, rather than the amigo, which has a fixed chest fastening system. ;)

Dianchi if you are the Essex side of Herts I will see if I can find Piper's last winter rug, it was a 5 or a 5'3 I think, I'm sure I've still got it.

Having re read her size it might not fit her til next year though!

I measured mine as 3 ft 9 so brought two 4ft 3s to allow for growth but they were too small when I got them. My foals are pretty small (one out of 14hh mare) so I definitely think you should go for a bigger one than measured I wish I had brought 4ft 6 now.

I buy 2 sizes apart and lightweights as weanlings grow quite a coat, you can always put a stable rung underneath if they really need it, though some b'stard nicked my cheapie pony stables last winter!! So they will start off in say a 4'3" I buy a 4'9" and they go into that after their backside is growing out of the 4'3", the 4'9" is roomy then I wait for the backside to poke out of that one before going to a 5'3". I will use a 4'6" stable to cover the really cold periods under the 4'9".
I like the fit of Amigo pony rugs on weanilings as they have a better neck line, but I find the 600d are not tough enough so I buy the 1200d, worth the extra money.
