Dexter our 2 week old foal has had the squits since Thurs pm.
I did do the ivermectine wormer to mare after birth, but doesn't seem to have worked this time.

We have called the vet for advice and she's told us what to look out for but wanted to get some advice from you guys! We will be getting the vet out if its not improved by later today.

He is in at night and out during the day. Mum has got absolutely loads of milk. (My husband thinks that this may be the problem... too much of the rich stuff!!)
He is grazing a bit of grass himself and saw him eating mum's poo for the first time on Fri (Our other foal was eating it from about 1 week old) He is having a tiny bit of mums grub (And I mean tiny.. she is a pig and he only gets to lick a bit from the edge of the bowl! She's on Stud nuts and Alfa-A Lite
The squits aren't bloody they started a browny/greeny colour but he obligingly did it in the hanging bucket yesterday and it was a milky greeny grey colour.
He is bright in himself and doesn't seem poorly in any way other than the wet tail and dirty bum!
He isn't dehydrated as we have been checking that regularly!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

PeptoBismol, from chemists, twice daily, can work wonders, have used it for years now. Tip I got from a top stud years ago.

Also Protexin do a paste for foals.

I vet recommended Actimel (sp? the little probiotic drinks for humans!) to me for foal scours! Apparently they work wonderfully to settle their tummy and the foals love the taste of them, so no battles getting it down.

Might be worth a try

Kitty did this at the same age and on veterinary advice I syringed some natural yoghurt down her twice which did the trick completely. Only 20ml at a time an hour apart. Very cheap and cheerful remedy!
Hope it goes on alright.

You can get anti-diarrhoea paste from your vets, or as someone else has mentioned natural yoghurt does wonders also.

If you do get the vet out then they may ask for a collection of the diarrhoea for analysis, as we got this done on one of ours last year.....and it was easier said than done!

As you have said you just have to make sure they dont get dehydrated.

Hope he gets better soon.

I use Calf Scour Powders they are about £3 a sachet from farm stores, your vet or I think you can get them from the equine pharmacy.

They come in a devided sachet and contain electrolytes. You make them up with warm water and one sachet makes 2 ltrs then bottle feed them, mine loved them and was begging for more! It took about 3 feeds and all the scours were gone.

Ivermectin worked on one foal but not the other two this year.
