My foal born Monday has started to scour
frown.gif
I did worm the mare 7 hours after foaling but it hasn't worked this time. What treatments can i try? She is bright and feeding well but as she is so small and thin she could easily go backwards very quickly.

Hey have a look in breeding myths Andypandy suggests worming with an ivermectin which should prevent the scours!

Hows she doing got a name yet??

We use a product called Diarsanol. It is used for dogs but I think you get the equine version too.It is really good and make sure the foal is not running a temp or is dehydrated.
Edited to say that I presume you are washing and drying its backend and use vaseline to stop any burning.

AP will help, but we worm Ivermectin 12/18 hours after birth and if not then pro kolin. keep bum clean and as above vasline or sudacream. Take temp too.

Hi,

One of our foals has just had this problem, speaking to a couple of people at large studs we were recomended to use Pepto bimsol and natural live yoghurt. The vets tratment was not working after 4 days so we thought we would give it a try. worked and it cleared up in 24 hours.

It's important to clean and wash the bum to stop any flys laying eggs etc.

Hi I would also go with the Pepto Bismol. Foals may scour when mare has foal heat but this should clear up very quickly. Mine didn't and also ended up on medication from vet which didn't seem to work then gave PB and cleared up in 24 hours.

She has only started today, just loose enough to touch her little vulva. Has had a bum wash and is covered in petroleum jelly for protection. How much of these tratments do you give in each dose?

Had one this year, mare wormed with Ivermectin within hours of birth but foal still got scours, tried all sorts but the Muller probiotic drink from the supermarket did the trick, mine liked the strawberry best! I put it in a 60ml syringe and just trickled it in it was earier than youghurt.
